Hip pain in active patients with early osteoarthritis can be quite debilitating, affecting mobility, quality of life, and overall well-being. Management of this patient population is challenging because arthroplasty implants inevitably have limited life expectancy while chondral damage can mitigate the benefits of arthroscopic or open hip preservation. A multifaceted, patient-specific approach to clinical decision making is crucial in this patient population, given their higher activity level and expectations compared with older cohorts.

Purpose Of Review: Artificial intelligence (AI) offers a new frontier for aiding in the management of both acute and chronic pain, which may potentially transform opioid prescribing practices and addiction prevention strategies. In this review paper, not only do we discuss some of the current literature around predicting various opioid-related outcomes, but we also briefly point out the next steps to improve trustworthiness of these AI models prior to real-time use in clinical workflow.

Recent Findings: Machine learning-based predictive models for identifying risk for persistent postoperative opioid use have been reported for spine surgery, knee arthroplasty, hip arthroplasty, arthroscopic joint surgery, outpatient surgery, and mixed surgical populations.

Synovial chondromatosis (SC) is a rare, benign joint disorder characterized by cartilaginous nodule formation within the synovial membrane. While SC typically affects larger joints such as the knee and hip, ankle involvement is exceptionally uncommon, with only a few cases documented in medical literature. We present a case of a 38-year-old male who experienced a rare presentation of recurrent ankle sprains and a palpable mass, ultimately diagnosed with SC in the ankle.

Clinical outcomes of arthroscopic modified suture augmentation versus InternalBrace™ reconstruction in the treatment of chronic ankle instability.

BMC Musculoskelet Disord

January 2025

Department of Sports Medicine, The First Affiliated Hospital, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Speed Capability, The Guangzhou Key Laboratory of Precision Orthopedics and Regenerative Medicine, Jinan University, Guangzhou, 510630, PR China.

Background: At present, the modified suture augmentation (MSA) repair and the InternalBrace™ (IB) reconstruction techniques are commonly used for the treatment of chronic ankle instability (CAI). This study aimed to evaluate and compare the clinical efficacy of the MSA repair and IB reconstruction techniques, providing a reference for clinical practice.

Methods: After propensity score matching, 50 patients with CAI between May 2021 and May 2022 were included in this retrospective study.

Background: Surgical management methods for Hepple IV-V osteochondral lesions of the talus (OLT) are diverse. This study aimed to compare the clinical efficacy of arthroscopic autologous cancellous bone grafting and medial malleolar osteotomy combined with autologous periosteal iliac bone grafting in the treatment of medial Hepple IV-V OLT.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of clinical data from patients who underwent surgical treatment for Hepple IV-V OLT (2020-2023) was conducted.
