Gene expression programs are tightly regulated by heritable "epigenetic" information, which is stored as chemical modifications of histones and DNA. With the recent development of sequencing-based epigenome mapping technologies and cancer cellular reprogramming, the tools are now in hand to analyze the epigenetic contribution to human cancer.

Background: Gravid females with pelvic fractures are rarely encountered by the orthopaedic trauma surgeon. The initial injury can be detrimental to the pregnant patient, but an unnecessary "second hit" from surgery could also contribute to the outcome of the fetus. Understanding the surgical risks for this unique patient population requires knowledge about the negative effects of anesthesia, surgical exposures, and radiation.

α-Synuclein (αS) is a 140 amino-acid neuronal protein highly enriched in presynaptic nerve terminals. Its progressive accumulation in Lewy bodies and neurites is the hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD). A growing number of studies highlights a critical interplay between lipid metabolism and αS biology.

Carcinogenesis encompasses processes that lead to increased mutation rates, enhanced cellular division (tumour growth), and invasive growth. Colorectal cancer (CRC) carcinogenesis in carriers of pathogenic APC (path_APC) and pathogenic mismatch repair gene (path_MMR) variants is initiated by a second hit affecting the corresponding wild-type allele. In path_APC carriers, second hits result in the development of multiple adenomas, with CRC typically emerging after an additional 20 years.

Excessive fibrosis is the primary factor for the failure of glaucoma drainage device (GDD) implantation. Thus, strategies to suppress scar formation in GDD implantation are crucial. Although it is known that in implanted medical devices, microscale modification of the implant surface can modulate cell behavior and reduce the incidence of fibrosis, in the field of ophthalmic implants, especially the modification and effects of hydrogel micropatterns have rarely been reported.

Immune-checkpoint-inhibitors (ICI) target key regulators of the immune system expressed by cancer cells that mask those from recognition by the immune system. They have improved the outcome for patients with various cancer types, such as melanoma. ICI-based therapy is frequently accompanied by immune-related adverse side effects (IRAEs).
