Testing for the presence of genetically modified material in seed samples is of critical importance for all stakeholders in the agricultural industry, including growers, seed manufacturers, and regulatory bodies. While rapid antibody-based testing for the transgenic protein has fulfilled this need in the past, the introduction of new variants of a given transgene demands new diagnostic regimen that allows distinguishing different traits at the nucleic acid level. Although such molecular tests can be performed by PCR in the laboratory, their requirement for expensive equipment and sophisticated operation have prevented its uptake in point-of-use applications. A recently developed isothermal DNA amplification technique, recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA), combines simple sample preparation and amplification work-flow procedures with the use of minimal detection equipment in real time. Here, we report the development of a highly sensitive and specific RPA-based detection system for Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield (RR2Y) material in soybean (Glycine max) seed samples and present the results of studies applying the method in both laboratory and field-type settings.

Seed tuber microbiome can predict growth potential of potato varieties.

Nat Microbiol

December 2024

Plant-Microbe Interactions, Institute of Environmental Biology, Department of Biology, Science4Life, Utrecht University, Utrecht, the Netherlands.

Potato vigour, the growth potential of seed potatoes, is a key agronomic trait that varies significantly across production fields due to factors such as genetic background and environmental conditions. Seed tuber microbiomes are thought to influence plant health and crop performance, yet the precise relationships between microbiome composition and potato vigour remain unclear. Here we conducted microbiome sequencing on seed tuber eyes and heel ends from 6 potato varieties grown in 240 fields.

Exposure Assessment of Essential and Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs) from Chia Seeds.

J Xenobiot

November 2024

Grupo de Investigación en Toxicología Ambiental y Seguridad de los Alimentos y Medicamentos, Universidad de La Laguna, 38071 La Laguna, Canary Islands, Spain.

The increasing consumption of chia seeds is followed by a growing interest in their nutritional and toxicological characterization. To assess the characterization of the essential and PTEs of this novel food, 20 samples of conventional and organic chia seeds available on the European market were analyzed using ICP-OES. Then, the dietary exposure to these elements was assessed.

Urbanization greatly impacts both the diversity of soil seed banks and the spatial dynamics of species. These seed banks serve as a window into the ecological history and potential for recovery in urban wastelands, which are continually evolving due to urbanization. In this study, we selected 24 plots along urban-rural gradients in Shanghai, China.

Effects of endophytes on early growth and ascorbate metabolism in .

Front Plant Sci

December 2024

Department of Plant Biology, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ, United States.

Understanding the early interactions between plants and endophytes will contribute to a more systematic approach to enhancing endophyte-mediated effects on plant growth and environmental stress resistance. This study examined very early growth and ascorbate metabolism after seed treatment of with three different endophytes. The three endophytes used were pb1(Bapb1), (Ml) and SLB4 (SLB4).
