Adrenal glands are zonated endocrine organs that are essential in controlling body homeostasis. How zonation is induced and maintained and how renewal of the adrenal cortex is ensured remain a mystery. Here we show that capsular RSPO3 signals to the underlying steroidogenic compartment to induce β-catenin signaling and imprint glomerulosa cell fate. Deletion of RSPO3 leads to loss of SHH signaling and impaired organ growth. Importantly, Rspo3 function remains essential in adult life to ensure replenishment of lost cells and maintain the properties of the zona glomerulosa. Thus, the adrenal capsule acts as a central signaling center that ensures replacement of damaged cells and is required to maintain zonation throughout life.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) and neuropeptide Y receptors (NPYRs) are expressed in reproductive tissues contributing to the regulation of gonadal function. This exploratory study examines the potential impact of their modulation by assessing the effects of exendin-4 (Ex-4) and peptide YY (PYY) (3-36) on endocrine ovaries and adrenals in high-fat diet (HFD) mice. Ex-4 and PYY(3-36) reduced blood glucose and energy intake, with no effects on body weight.

Article Synopsis
  • The Wuling capsule, a traditional Chinese medicine derived from Xylaria nigripes, is traditionally used to treat depression and anxiety, though its exact mechanisms are not fully understood.
  • This study investigates how Wuling capsule alleviates depression and anxiety-like behaviors in mice subjected to chronic social defeat stress, utilizing various behavioral tests and biochemical analyses.
  • Results show that the capsule contains 123 components, with Nesfatin-1 playing a key role; increased Nesfatin-1 levels are linked to depression symptoms, while reducing its expression can alleviate these effects.

Background: Peristomal pyoderma gangrenosum (PPG) is a critical complication after surgical ileostomy or colostomy placement. While topical treatments are often effective, most of the available vehicles reduce ostomy pouch adhesion. There are no commercially available corticosteroid powders for topical application; however, using powder from crushed corticosteroid tablets or capsules may circumvent this issue.

Comparison of Effectiveness of Intraarticular Hyaluronate and Corticosteroid injections in Adhesive Capsulitis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Pain Physician

September 2024

Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, College of Medicine, Yeungnam University, Namku, Taegu, Republic of Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • Adhesive capsulitis causes inflammation in the shoulder, leading to pain and restricted motion, with intraarticular corticosteroid (CS) and hyaluronic acid (HA) injections as common treatments, but their effectiveness is uncertain.
  • A meta-analysis of 7 studies found that CS injections provided better pain relief and functional improvement in the short term (2-4 weeks), while HA injections had comparable results at 6 and 12 weeks.
  • HA injections are a viable option for patients needing multiple treatments or those at risk of side effects from CS, despite CS showing quicker pain relief initially.
