The clinical relevance of a morphologic distinction between Burkitt's (B) and non-Burkitt's (NB) types of small non-cleaved cell (SNC) non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) has been controversial. Numerous attempts to discern an important clinical difference between the subtypes have failed to provide a convincing reason to maintain this distinction for other than descriptive purposes. Because of conflicting reports in the literature, the authors have analyzed 183 cases of SNC NHL in children from the Pediatric Oncology Group and 129 from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (Memphis, TN). The results from both series, which consist of approximately the same proportions of B and NB subtypes, (i.e., approximately 54%-58% B, 36% NB, and 6%-10% not otherwise specified) show no significant differences in age at presentation, extent of disease, primary site of involvement, or survival. The authors conclude that the morphologic distinction between B and NB types of SNC NHL in children lacks demonstrable clinical importance.

Objectives: To determine the histologic types of testicular tumors and identify associated risk factors.

Methods: Data on clinical presentation, age, race, history of cryptorchidism or testicular trauma and histologic types, on each patient with testis tumor, were abstracted from medical records and the pathology register.

Results: Of 14 tumors, 11 were malignant.

We describe 11 patients first seen with symptoms or signs related to lymphoma predominantly or exclusively involving one or both kidneys. The patients were seven men and four women, aged 40-77 years (median, 67). Seven of them had one or more other prior (four), subsequent (two) or both simultaneous and subsequent (one) primary malignant or premalignant lesions.

Human B cell interleukin 10.

Leuk Lymphoma

Division of Hematology and Oncology, Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Research Institute, Columbus, Ohio 43210.

Interleukin 10 (IL-10) is a novel lymphokine which exhibits strong DNA and amino acid sequence homology to BCRF1, an open reading frame in the Epstein-Barr virus genome. Using a wide panel of EBV positive and EBV negative cell lines, it has been shown that EBV positive B cell lines derived from patients with AIDS and Burkitt's lymphoma (AABCL) secrete large quantities of B cell IL-10, compared with EBV-positive B cell lines obtained from patients with undifferentiated lymphomas of Burkitt's and non-Burkitt's types. In contrast, EBV-negative B cell lines do not express IL-10 by Northern blot analysis, ELISA or even PCR.

Analysis of African Burkitt's and high-grade B cell non-Burkitt's lymphoma for Epstein-Barr virus genomes using in situ hybridization.

We investigated the association of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) with African cases of Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) and high grade B cell non-Burkitt's lymphoma (non-BL) occurring in areas where BL is endemic. The presence of EBV genomes was analysed in 24 cases using in situ hybridization with a 35S-labelled EBV probe applied to paraffin sections. EBV DNA was detected in each of 10 cases of BL in which technically satisfactory results were obtained, the virus being homogeneously distributed in all identifiable tumour cells.

Burkitt's and non-Burkitt's type lymphoma: clinicopathological and radiological manifestations.

J Formos Med Assoc

April 1991

Department of Radiology, Medical College and Hospital, National Taiwan University, Taipei, R.O.C.

Nine cases of Burkitt's type and 5 case of non-Burkitt's type small, non-cleaved cell lymphoma were retrospectively studied to evaluate their clinical and radiological manifestations. In the Burkitt's group, the median age of onset was 9 years old; the male to female ratio was 2:1; and the most frequent presentation was abdominal mass. These features conformed to those of non-endemic (or American) type Burkitt's lymphoma.
