Objective: The aim of the study was to determine the degree of hearing preservation (HP) and its relation to electrode array length after cochlear implantation using different thin flexible electrode arrays (TFEA).
Study Design: Retrospective analysis.
Intervention: One hundred twenty adult patients with preoperative residual hearing received a cochlear implant with a TFEA: 46 received a TFEA20, 34 a TFEA24, and 40 a TFEA28 mm.
Main Outcome Measures: Pure-tone audiometry (125-1500 Hz) was performed preoperatively, at initial fitting, and at 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. Median hearing loss (HL) was determined for each of the three array groups. The pre- to postoperative pure-tone average difference was scaled into three groups (≤15 dB, >15 to ≤30 dB, >30 dB) for array group.
Results: At initial fitting, median HL of 17.5 dB (TFEA20), 20 dB (TFEA24), and 24 dB (TFEA28) was observed. At 12 months, medial HL of 15 dB (TFEA20), 19.4 dB (TFEA24), and 32.5 dB (TFEA28) was observed. At initial fitting, a HL of ≤15 dB was achieved in 45.6% TFEA20 subjects, 29.4% TFEA24 subjects, and 15.0% TFEA28 subjects; compared with 48.8% TFEA20 subjects, 50.0% TFEA24 subjects, and 15.8% TFEA28 subjects at 12 months.
Conclusion: HP is possible in the majority of subjects who are implanted with a TFEA20, 24, or 28. Using shorter arrays led to greater HP and lower median HL.

Background: Limited information is available regarding the changes in blood culture utilization following the COVID-19 pandemic. Blood culture utilization rate is a critical indicator of diagnostic efficiency for infectious diseases. This study aims to describe the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on blood culture utilization rate in Shanghai.

This study focuses on the synthesis of a novel Cerium-Magnesium (CeO-MgO) binary oxide nanomaterials by a simple co-precipitation process and used to remove harmful pollutants such as Cr(VI), Cu(II), and F. The morphology, phase, crystallite size, thermal stability, functional groups, surface area, and porosity of the synthesized nanomaterial were determined by using XRD, SEM, FTIR, TGA/DTA, and BET studies. The prepared nanomaterials showed adsorption selectivity of Cu(II) ≈ F> Cr(VI) with a high adsorption capacity of 84.

Objective: FREEDOM (Study 342; NCT03201900) assessed the long-term treatment effect of perampanel monotherapy in adolescent and adult patients (12-74 years of age) with untreated focal-onset seizures (FOS), with or without focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures (FBTCS).
Methods: In the Core Study, after a 4-week Pretreatment Phase, perampanel was up-titrated to 4 mg/day during a 6-week Titration Period followed by a 26-week Maintenance Period. Patients experiencing seizure(s) during the 4-mg/day Maintenance Period could have perampanel up-titrated to 8 mg/day over 4 weeks then could enter the 26-week 8-mg/day Maintenance Period.

Objective: The present study aimed to investigate the initial clinical features of infantile-onset genetic epilepsy and compare initial seizure variables and responses to sodium channel blockers between SCN1A and non-SCN1A group.
Methods: We selected 122 patients, comprising 58 patients with SCN1A mutations and 64 patients with mutations in other than SCN1A, from our institutional database.
Results: Patients identified in the SCN1A group tended to present with fever, prolonged seizure duration, and hemiclonic seizure semiology.

Monitoring dynamic neurochemical signals in the brain of free-moving animals remains great challenging in biocompatibility and direct implantation capability of current electrodes. Here we created a self-supporting polymer-based flexible microelectrode (rGPF) with sufficient bending stiffness for direct brain implantation without extra devices, but demonstrating low Young's modulus with remarkable biocompatibility and minimal position shifts. Meanwhile, screening by density functional theory (DFT) calculation, we designed and synthesized specific ligands targeting Mg2+ and Ca2+, and constructed Mg-E and Ca-E sensors with high selectivity, good reversibility, and fast response time, successfully monitoring Mg2+ and Ca2+ in vivo up to 90 days.
