Start-up of Anammox-HAP in IC reactors: Revelation of sludge characteristics and microbial community structure.

Environ Res

February 2025

School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Nanjing Tech University, Nanjing 211816, China. Electronic address:

The scarcity of seed sludge poses a significant barrier to the advancement of anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) process. In this investigation, two alternative sludge (anaerobic granular sludge (AGS) and activated flocculent sludge (AFS)) were employed to start up the anammox process in internal circulation (IC) reactors with the hydroxyapatite (HAP) strategy. Both reactors achieved rapid start-up on days 83 and 53, respectively.

Unlabelled: Bacterial persistence profoundly impacts biofilms, infections, and antibiotic effectiveness. Persister formation can be substantially promoted by nutrient shift, which commonly exists in natural environments. However, mechanisms that promote persister formation remain poorly understood.

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, Alabama, USA.

is one of the most well-studied model organisms used in the scientific community. Its ease of manipulation, accessible growth conditions, short life cycle, and conserved eukaryotic metabolic pathways make it a useful model organism. Consequently, yeast has been used to investigate a myriad of phenomena, from microbial to human studies.

Article Synopsis
  • Human activities have transformed the natural river network in Yinzhou's southeastern plain into a mixed water system, leading to urban flooding and water security issues due to altered river connectivity.
  • The paper presents a method for evaluating river connectivity using complex networks and cellular automata, analyzing changes from the 1990s to the 2020s.
  • Key findings include a declining river connectivity during early urbanization, ongoing degradation in the northeastern area, and a strong link between urbanization and connectivity changes impacting flood severity.

Advances in Engineering Circular RNA Vaccines.

Pathogens

August 2024

Yantai Key Laboratory of Nanomedicine & Advanced Preparations, Yantai Institute of Materia Medica, Yantai 264005, China.

Engineered circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a class of single-stranded RNAs with head-to-tail covalently linked structures that integrate open reading frames (ORFs) and internal ribosome entry sites (IRESs) with the function of coding and expressing proteins. Compared to mRNA vaccines, circRNA vaccines offer a more improved method that is safe, stable, and simple to manufacture. With the rapid revelation of the biological functions of circRNA and the success of Severe Acute Respiratory Coronavirus Type II (SARS-CoV-2) mRNA vaccines, biopharmaceutical companies and researchers around the globe are attempting to develop more stable circRNA vaccines for illness prevention and treatment.
