This paper reports the investigation on the effect of protective materials on poplar (Populus sp.) wood modifications as consequence of artificial photo-degradation in controlled environment. The novelty of this work is to try to understand what happens to wood surface under the protective layer. Shellac, beeswax and Linfoil® were tested to compare traditional and novel products generally used for wood. The samples, uncovered and covered by these protective layers, were artificially aged. Colour and chemical modifications due to ageing were investigated at different time intervals by reflectance spectrophotometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and hyperspectral imaging. The obtained data were elaborated by statistical and chemometric tools in order to verify their significance and to assess the relationship between groups of measurements. The results highlighted that shellac, beeswax and Linfoil® materials have a very low protective effect on wood photo-degradation for long times of exposure, by little reducing the changes of wood components.

In the acoustics of musical instruments with a resonator body, the aging of the wood leads to the improvement of the acoustic properties due to increasing the crystallinity of wood. This phenomenon could be explained by the fact that wood is a complex product based on three-dimensional polymer chains of carbohydrates, its aging being closely related to covalent cross-linking and scission of polymer chains. The aim of this study was to evaluate at a multiscale the changes produced artificial aging of tone wood by measuring the acoustic, mechanical and chemical parameters.

This work aims to highlight the multiple features shown by curcuma-based pigment and rice bran wax, which can be selectively employed as bio-based additives for the realization of multilayer wood coatings with multiple functionalities, harnessing the capabilities of the two environmentally friendly fillers, in line with current environmental sustainability trends. The role of the two green materials on the morphology of the composite layers was examined through observations employing scanning electron and optical microscopy, revealing a strong alteration of the film's appearance, both its color and reflectivity. Additionally, their influence on the paint's resilience was assessed by exposing the samples to UV-B radiation and consecutive thermal shocks.

As one of the sustainable and renewable materials, the carbonization of natural wood is generally considered as a low-cost, environmentally friendly method to fabricate carbon materials. Natural wood, by surficial carbonization, can possess an excellent photothermal effect, low heat loss, and easy water transportation in the solar water desalination process based on the unique structures, leading to high solar water desalination performance. Here, we design and construct a composite of commercial P25 nanocrystal-loaded semi-spherical wood with surficial carbonization at the semi-spherical end (P25/wC-s-s), which is beneficial for light harvesting and water evaporation due to the semi-spherical structure-induced large surface area.
