Successful treatment of a prolactinoma with the antipsychotic drug aripiprazole.

Endocrinol Diabetes Metab Case Rep

Department of Internal Medicine, Section of Endocrinology , University Medical Center Utrecht, Utrecht , The Netherlands.

Published: June 2016

Unlabelled: In this report, we describe a female patient with both prolactinoma and psychotic disorder who was successfully treated with aripiprazole, a partial dopamine 2 receptor agonist. During the follow-up of more than 10 years, her psychotic symptoms improved considerably, prolactin levels normalised and the size of the prolactinoma decreased. This observation may be of clinical relevance in similar patients who often are difficult to treat with the regular dopaminergic drugs.

Learning Points: Prolactinoma coinciding with psychosis can represent a therapeutic challenge. In contrast to many other antipsychotic drugs, aripiprazole is associated with a decrease in prolactin levels.Aripiprazole can be a valuable pharmaceutical tool to treat both prolactinoma and psychosis.

Purpose: Pituitary adenomas, despite their histologically benign nature, can severely impact patients' quality of life due to hormone hypersecretion. Invasion of the medial wall of the cavernous sinus (MWCS) by these tumors complicates surgical outcomes, lowering biochemical remission rates and increasing recurrence. This study aims to share our institutional experience with the selective resection of the MWCS in endoscopic pituitary surgery.

Cabergoline Induced Pathological Gambling in an Adolescent with Prolactinoma.

J Clin Res Pediatr Endocrinol

January 2025

Department of Pediatric Endocrinology, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul University, Istanbul, Türkiye.

Prolactinomas are the most common hormone-secreting pituitary adenomas in adolescents. Dopamine agonists (DA) are used as first-line medical treatment. DAs are associated with an array of physical side effects; however, impulse control disorders (ICDs), such as pathological gambling (PG), have also been reported in adults.

Determinants of cerebrospinal fluid leakage in a large cohort of macroprolactinomas.

Introduction: Macroprolactinomas are the most frequent subtype of pituitary adenomas. Their treatment has been improved since the onset of dopamin agonists (DA). Nevertheless, DA can cause a cerebospinal fluid (CSF) leakage by shrinking the tumor and lead to a bacterial meningitis.

Purpose: Pituitary neuroendocrine tumor (PitNET), excluding prolactinoma, often requires endoscopic endonasal surgery (EES). Identifying predictive factors for complications, and particularly rare ones such as hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH) that may affect fertility, is challenging. This study investigated de-novo postoperative HH and its potential impact on fertility.

Microprolactinoma Growth During Pregnancy With Pituitary Tumor Apoplexy: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Case Rep Endocrinol

January 2025

Unidad Académica de Endocrinología y Metabolismo, Hospital de Clínicas "Dr. Manuel Quíntela", Facultad de Medicina, Universidad de la República, Montevideo, Uruguay.

Prolactinomas are the most prevalent subtype of pituitary adenomas and represent one of the leading etiological factors responsible for amenorrhea and infertility in women. The primary therapeutic approach entails the use of dopamine agonists, which effectively restore fertility. In cases of microprolactinomas, the likelihood of experiencing a symptomatic enlargement of the tumor during pregnancy is exceptionally low, estimated at a mere 2.
