Smartphone patient monitoring post-laser resurfacing. | LitMetric

Smartphone patient monitoring post-laser resurfacing.

Australas J Dermatol

uRepublic Cosmetic Dermatology & Veins, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Published: November 2017

Background/objectives: Patients should be monitored post-laser resurfacing for reassurance and the early detection of adverse events. Smartphone monitoring in the post-laser resurfacing setting is an efficient and convenient tool that is well accepted by patients and dermatologists. The objective was to identify the benefits and barriers of, and patient attitudes towards, smartphone monitoring in the post-laser resurfacing setting.

Methods: A retrospective audit of 123 laser resurfacing patients was undertaken to determine the characteristics of this population. A web-based survey was used to determine patients' attitudes towards smartphone monitoring.

Results: The commonest indications for laser resurfacing were acne scarring and photoageing rejuvenation. 88% of patients either had no adverse outcomes or expected post-laser resurfacing side-effects such as erythema. 12% developed adverse effects requiring intervention. The survey showed that all patients who had used the smartphone monitoring service felt it was a positive initiative for post-laser patients. Of note, most patients not using the smartphone review service were simply unaware of its existence. Biases may have been introduced as staff were less likely to promote the review service to patients undergoing lower intensity procedures.

Conclusions: Smartphone monitoring post-laser resurfacing is an efficient and convenient alternative to face-to-face review for both patients and dermatologists. As technology improves and patients' expectations increase we expect more patients will request teledermatology reviews in order to easily and rapidly access medical advice.

Laser-Induced Koebner-Related Skin Reactions: A Clinical Overview.

Medicina (Kaunas)

The Koebner phenomenon (KP), also known as the isomorphic response, describes the process by which new lesions that are clinically and histologically identical to a patient's existing skin disease develop following trauma. Many skin diseases exhibit this characteristic, with variations that include possible, questionable, and pseudo-Koebner reactions, with the latter category occurring due to infectious agents seeding at a trauma site. Laser application, a type of controlled skin injury used for improving cutaneous lesions and skin rejuvenation, is also considered a form of trauma.

Article Synopsis
  • The erbium-YAG laser is a well-established treatment in dermatology, but there's a lack of research on its effectiveness and side effects specifically for Indian skin concerning superficial skin conditions.
  • A study with 250 patients evaluated the efficacy and safety of the erbium-YAG laser for various superficial dermatoses, assessing outcomes based on lesion clearance percentages.
  • Results showed significant improvement in conditions like verruca plana and seborrheic keratosis, with some adverse effects being common, such as post-laser erythema and pain; however, the laser provided good cosmetic results and a low recurrence rate.

Background: Fractional carbon dioxide (CO ) laser resurfacing is used successfully for facial rejuvenation. Post procedure skincare is a variable that influences downtime caused by pain/tenderness, erythema, crusting, and bruising.

Aims: The primary objective of this pilot study was to demonstrate the benefits of human platelet extract (HPE) (plated)™ CALM Serum, a new topical cosmetic product, following fractionated CO ablative laser resurfacing treatment to the entire face versus standard of care.

Background: Acne scarring remains a significant problem. Laser therapy has produced varying results with deeper ablative therapies occasionally associated with side effects including delayed healing, infection, scarring, erythema, acne, milia, edema and dyspigmentation.

Objective: Can adjuvant topical therapy impact the healing process and outcome of patients treated with fractional laser for acne scarring?

Methods And Materials: Ten patients were randomized to receive either Regenerating Skin Nectar with TriHex Technology- RSN or a bland moisturizer.
