This study investigates the anti-diabetic effects of rutin from tartary buckwheat sprout in type 2 diabetes mouse model. The rutin content in tartary buckwheat sprout (TBS) is five times higher than that found in common buckwheat sprout (CBS) as evident from high-performance liquid chromatography analysis. Administration of either rutin or TBS ethanolic extract to diabetes mice decreased the serum glucose level significantly. Rutin down-regulated the expression levels of protein-tyrosine phosphatase 1B; it is negative regulator of insulin pathway, both transcriptionally and translationally in myocyte C2C12 in a dose-dependent manner. In conclusion, rutin can play a critical role in down-regulation of serum glucose level in type 2 diabetes.

Identification and quantitative trait locus mapping of Tartary buckwheat pre-harvest sprouting.

J Sci Food Agric

Background: Tartary buckwheat (Fagopyrum tartaricum) is particularly vulnerable to pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) due to its extended flowering and fruiting cycle, especially during periods of prolonged rainfall. This susceptibility has significant adverse effects on yield, quality and post-harvest processing. In this study, a recombinant inbred lines (RILs) population (XJ-RILs) was developed from a cross between the PHS-susceptible Tartary buckwheat variety 'Xiaomiqiao' (female parent) and the highly PHS-resistant variety 'Jinqiaomai 2' (male parent).

Directed Evolution of an Alginate Lyase from sp. for Seaweed Fertilizer Production from the Brown Seaweed .

J Agric Food Chem

January 2025

College of Food Science and Nutritional Engineering, China Agricultural University, No.17 Qinghua East Road, Haidian District, Beijing 100083, China.

An alginate lyase (FsAly7) from sp. was engineered by directed evolution to improve its optimum temperature and thermostability. The optimum temperature of the positive mutant mFsAly7 (FsAly7-Ser43Pro) was increased by 5 °C, and the thermal inactivation half-lives at 40 and 45 °C were 4.

In this research, we investigated the physiological modifications, flavonoid metabolism, and antioxidant systems of two buckwheat ( Moench.) cultivars, Pintian and Suqiao, during germination. The results demonstrated an initial increase followed by a subsequent decline in the flavonoid content of the buckwheat sprouts throughout germination.

Buckwheat possesses significant nutritional content and contains different bioactive compounds, such as total flavonoids, which enhance its appeal to consumers. This study employed single-factor experiments and the response surface methodology to identify the optimal germination conditions for enhancing the total flavonoid content in buckwheat sprouts through ultraviolet-B treatment. The research showed that buckwheat sprouts germinated for 3 days at a temperature of 28.

Oxidative stress, which results from an overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), can cause damage that may contribute to a range of metabolic disorders. Antioxidants are considered to upregulate the activity of antioxidant enzymes, which are crucial for eliminating excess ROS and safeguarding the body against oxidative stress-induced damage. In the present study, the effect of polyphenol extracts from tartary buckwheat sprouts (TBSE) on the redox system of HepG2-cell-induced oxidative injury by hydrogen peroxide were investigated for evaluating the protective effect and mechanism of tartary buckwheat sprouts (TBS).
