Putting piezoelectric sensors into Fano resonances.

Microsyst Nanoeng

December 2024

Key Laboratory of MEMS of the Ministry of Education, Southeast University, Nanjing, 210096, China.

Piezoelectric resonance sensors are essential to many diverse applications associated with chemical and biological sensing. In general, they rely on continuously detecting the resonant frequency shift of piezoelectric resonators due to analytes accreting on their surfaces in vacuum, gas or fluid. Resolving the small analyte changes requires the resonators with a high quality factor.

Dots and boxes algorithm for Peierls substitution: Application to multidomain topological insulators.

J Phys Condens Matter

December 2024

Departamento de Física, Facultad de Ciencias, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Circuito interior s/n, Colonia Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Coyoacán, C.P. 0451 Ciudad Universitaria, Ciudad de México, México, Ciudad de Mexico, 04510, MEXICO.

Magnetic fields can be introduced into discrete models of quantum systems by the Peierls substitution. For tight-binding Hamiltonians, the substitution results in a set of (Peierls) phases that are usually calculated from the magnetic vector potential. As the potential is not unique, a convenient gauge can be chosen to fit the geometry and simplify calculations.

Bony Stroke on Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Rare Entity or a Missed Diagnosis?

Cureus

November 2024

Neuroradiology Department, Unidade Local de Saúde de São João, Porto, PRT.

Bone or cartilage anomalies affecting the arteries supplying the brain can be a structural cause of ischemic stroke. Due to their rarity, there is currently no standardized approach for evaluating and treating these so-called bony strokes. We present a case of a 79-year-old woman with a history of cranial settling due to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and moderate disability, who presented with insidious dizziness and gait disturbances over three weeks.

Objective: To develop, externally validate, and test a series of computer algorithms to accurately predict antibiotic susceptibility test (AST) results at the time of clinical diagnosis, up to 3 days before standard urine culture results become available, with the goal of improving antibiotic stewardship and patient outcomes.

Patients And Methods: Machine learning algorithms were developed and trained to predict susceptibility or resistance using over 4.7 million discrete AST classifications from urine cultures in a cohort of adult patients from outpatient and inpatient settings from 2012 to 2022.

A multiphysics hybrid continuum - agent-based model of in vitro vascularized organoids.

Comput Biol Med

December 2024

Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería, Universidad de Sevilla, Spain. Electronic address:

Background: Organoids are 3D in vitro models that fulfill a hierarchical function, representing a small version of living tissues and, therefore, a good approximation of cellular mechanisms. However, one of the main disadvantages of these models is the appearance of a necrotic core due to poor vascularization. The aim of this work is the development of a numerical framework that incorporates the mechanical stimulation as a key factor in organoid vascularization.
