Purpose: To assess whether exposure to an extended-release (ER) oxycodone with abuse deterrent properties (ADF) reduced tampering of oxycodone in a real-world, postmarket setting to address the thinking behind Category 4 labeling by the FDA.
Methods: Data from an observational cross-sectional study of the general adult population (2022) was used under a causal framework to estimate the confounding-adjusted odds of tampering oxycodone after exposure to two types of ADF ER oxycodone. The tampering behaviors of those who used only single entity immediate-release (SE-IR) oxycodone was used as a comparison.

Introduction: Analgesics are among the most widely used drugs worldwide. The French Addictovigilance Network (FAN) established the antalgiques stupéfiants et ordonnances sécurisées (ASOS [narcotic analgesics and secure prescriptions]) survey in order to assess the dissemination of tamper-resistant prescription forms for narcotic analgesic within the medical community, as well as the nature and evolution of the prescriptions. After outlining the missions of the FAN, this article will describe the population treated with narcotic analgesics in France, their therapeutic indications and how the data have evolved since 2007.

Introduction: In this perspective review, we evaluated the clinical management of fatal fentanyl overdose in several routes of administration, concentrating on both legally prescribed and illegally produced formulations.
Methods: A literature search was conducted on Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases, using the following keywords: fentanyl, illicit fentanyl, deaths, misuse, abuse, and naloxone. We included only articles whose abstracts were available in English.

The misuse and abuse of opioid analgesics continue to pose a serious public health concern, but for some patients, opioids remain an important analgesic option. Extended-release (ER) opioid formulations are effective for treating chronic pain and are supported by multiple 12-week efficacy studies. ER opioids often contain a high opioid content, and similar to immediate-release (IR) formulations, are subject to abuse, misuse, and diversion.

Opioid tampering and diversion pose a serious problem for hospital patients with potentially life-threatening consequences. The ongoing opioid crisis has resulted in medications used for pain management and anesthesia, such as fentanyl and morphine, being stolen, substituted with a different substance, and abused. This work aims to mitigate tampering and diversion through analytical verification of the administered drug before it enters the patient.
