Scanning tunnelling microscopy and break-junction experiments realize metallic and molecular nanocontacts that act as ideal one-dimensional channels between macroscopic electrodes. Emergent nanoscale phenomena typical of these systems encompass structural, mechanical, electronic, transport, and magnetic properties. This Review focuses on the theoretical explanation of some of these properties obtained with the help of first-principles methods. By tracing parallel theoretical and experimental developments from the discovery of nanowire formation and conductance quantization in gold nanowires to recent observations of emergent magnetism and Kondo correlations, we exemplify the main concepts and ingredients needed to bring together ab initio calculations and physical observations. It can be anticipated that diode, sensor, spin-valve and spin-filter functionalities relevant for spintronics and molecular electronics applications will benefit from the physical understanding thus obtained.

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit diverse properties across different phases, making them promising materials for various engineering applications. In the present work, we employed a comprehensive approach, combining experimental investigations and computational simulations to elucidate the remarkable tunable frictional characteristics of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown WS monolayers through the sliding-induced transitions between the 1H and 1T' phases. Our atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements reveal a significant contrast in friction between the two phases, with the 1H phase displaying higher friction (∼52%) than the 1T' phase.

Friction reduction by transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers is well documented; however, wrinkle formation on the surface of TMDs takes place due to strain relaxation over time and leads to the deterioration of the tribological properties at a small scale. Herein, we report the role of wrinkles on the wear behavior of a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown aged WS monolayer and the comparison with wrinkle-free regions. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was utilized to perform load-dependent experiments, and we noticed that the wear initiated near wrinkles resulted in the disintegration of the monolayer.

Spin-orbit coupling gives rise to a range of spin-charge interconversion phenomena in nonmagnetic systems where certain spatial symmetries are reduced or absent. Chirality-induced spin-selectivity (CISS), a term that generically refers to a spin-dependent electron transfer in nonmagnetic chiral systems, is one such case, appearing in a variety of seemingly unrelated situations ranging from inorganic materials to molecular devices. In particular, the origin of CISS in molecular junctions is a matter of an intense current debate.

The physics of dynamic friction on water molecule contaminated surfaces is still poorly understood. In line with the growing interest in hydrophobic contact for industrial applications, this paper focuses on friction mechanisms in such interfaces. As a commonly used material, contact with graphite is considered in a twin-fold approach based on experimental investigations using the circular mode atomic force microscopy technique combined with molecular dynamic simulations.

A combination of low temperature atomic force microcopy and molecular dynamic simulations is used to demonstrate that soft designer molecules realize a sidewinding motion when dragged over a gold surface. Exploiting their longitudinal flexibility, pyrenylene chains are indeed able to lower diffusion energy barriers via on-surface directional locking and molecular strain. The resulting ultralow friction reaches values on the order of tens of pN reported so far only for rigid chains sliding on an incommensurate surface.
