Objectives: Evaluation of the aesthetic outcome and functional aspect after surgical correction of bifid nose by combined Millard forked flap with external rhinoplasty

Background: Bifid nose is a rare congenital anomaly that results during facial development but the explicit mechanism is not clearly understood. Clinical findings are quite variable with a wide range of severity. Surgical correction still represents great challenge to facial plastic surgeons; extensive deformities in many cases, rarity of condition and paucity of publications are contributing factors.

Methods: Surgical correction of six patients with bifid nose by a combined Millard forked flap with external rhinoplasty

Results: The aesthetic and functional outcomes were acceptable for all patients and parents. There were no considerable postoperative complications.

Conclusions: This approach is highly effective for various grades of bifid nose. Early management is preferable to avoid psychological morbidity. Secondary rhinoplasty is usually needed for cosmetic refinement.

Objectives: The receptor tyrosine kinase Kit is expressed in cells derived from the trunk neural crest (NC), such as melanocytes; however, its role in cranial NC cell development is not fully understood.

Methods: We investigated the effects of the heterozygous loss of Kit in NC cells during embryonic development by mating Kit mice with Wnt1-Cre mice to produce Wnt1-Cre; Kit embryos. In addition, Wnt1-Cre mice were mated with Rosa26R-yellow fluorescent protein (YFP) mice to visualize the tissue regions expressing Cre recombinase.

Reconstruction of the shortened columella in mild bifid nose using a propeller flap based on the nasal columella artery.

Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, The Ninth Affiliated Hospital of Shanghai Jiaotong Medicine University, 639 Zhi Zao Ju Rd., Shanghai 200011, PR China. Electronic address:

Bifid nose generally appears short columellar and lacks the nasal tip. Here, we describe a surgical correction technique for correcting the short columellar and nasal tip of bifid nose using a local flap to discuss outcomes, patient selection, and complications based on 11 years of experience. Thirty-two patients with mild wide bifid nose and shortened columella were included in this retrospective study.
