Published: July 2016

The majority of reactions currently performed in the chemical industry take place in organic solvents, compounds that are generally derived from petrochemicals. To promote chemical processes in water, we examined the use of synthetic, deep water-soluble cavitands in the Staudinger reduction of long-chain aliphatic diazides (C8 , C10 , and C12 ). The diazide substrates are taken up by the cavitand in D2 O in folded, dynamic conformations. The reduction of one azide group to an amine gives a complex in which the substrate is fixed in an unsymmetrical conformation, with the amine terminal exposed and the azide terminal deep and inaccessible within the cavitand. Accordingly, the reduction of the second azide group is inhibited, even with excess phosphine, and good yields of the monofunctionalized products are obtained. In contrast, the reduction of the free diazides in bulk solution yields diamine products.

Metal-organic frameworks generated from oligomeric ligands with functionalized tethers.

Chem Sci

December 2024

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of California, San Diego La Jolla California 92093 USA

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be prepared from oligomeric organic ligands to prepare materials referred to as oligoMOFs. Studies of oligoMOFs are relatively limited, with most existing reports focused on fundamental structure-property relationships. In this report, functional groups, such as terminal alkynes and pyridine groups, are installed on the tether between 1,4-benzene dicarboxylic acid (Hbdc) groups of the dimer ligands.

ConspectusThe design of properties and functions of molecular assemblies requires not only a proper choice of building blocks but also control over their packing arrangements. A highly versatile unit in this context is a particular type of triptycene with substituents at the 1,8,13-positions, called tripodal triptycene, which offers predictable molecular packing and multiple functionalization sites, both at the opposite 4,5,16- or 10 (bridgehead)-positions. These triptycene building blocks are capable of two-dimensional (2D) nested hexagonal packing, leading to the formation of 2D sheets, which undergo one-dimensional (1D) stacking into well-defined "2D+1D" structures.

Inflammation is a dynamic process which importantly involves migration of immune cells. Understanding the onset, acute phase and resolution of inflammation is greatly facilitated by their imaging. However, immune cells are sensitive, difficult to genetically manipulate and prone to changes in response to contact, hindering the application of well-established cell labeling methods.

Article Synopsis
  • The catalytic triad of RNase A, consisting of His12, Lys41, and His119, is crucial for cleaving RNA bonds and creates a positively charged environment at physiological pH.
  • Docking studies identified a new class of RNase A inhibitors, 1,4,5-trisubstituted-carboxylated 1,2,3-triazoles, which were synthesized using pre-functionalized compounds under solvent and catalyst-free conditions.
  • The synthesized inhibitors showed competitive inhibition with varying efficacy, with the most effective being bisthioglycolic acid and bisoxyacetic acid derivatives, demonstrating significant hydrogen bonding with RNase A and providing insights into the structure-activity relationship.

Copper/iron controlled regioselective 1,2-carboazidation of 1,3-dienes with acetonitrile and azidotrimethylsilane.

Carboazidation and diazidation were carried out on 1,3-diene compounds using TMSN as the azide source and MeCN as the cyanoalkylation reagent. This method exhibits excellent functional group tolerance, a broad substrate range, and a short reaction time, providing an effective pathway for synthesizing valuable azides. Our report introduces an unprecedented strategy for the carboazidation and diazidation of 1,3-dienes, with mechanism studies indicating that the reaction involves a radical pathway.
