Bloodstream infection (BSI) is a major cause of death in developed countries and the detection of microorganisms is essential in managing patients. Despite major progress has been made to improve identification of microorganisms, blood culture (BC) remains the gold standard and the first line tool for detecting BSIs. Consensus guidelines are available to ensure optimal BSI procedures, but BC practices often deviate from the recommendations. This review provides an update on clinical and technical issues related to blood collection and to BC performance, with a special focus on the blood sample strategy to optimize the sensitivity and specificity of BCs.

African swine fever (ASF) is an acute hemorrhagic disease in pigs caused by the African swine fever virus (ASFV), which has a high mortality rate and brought great damage to global pig farming industry. At present, there is no effective treatment or vaccine to combat ASFV infection, so early detection of ASFV has become particularly important. Therefore, the PDMS/chitosan/MPMs composite film was proposed to detect ASFV P72.

Early and highly accurate detection of rapidly damaging deadly disease like Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is essential for providing appropriate treatment to save valuable lives. Recent development in deep learning, particularly transfer learning, is gaining a preferred trend of research in medical image processing because of their admirable performance, even with small datasets. It inspires us to develop a novel deep learning-based leukemia detection system in which an efficient and lightweight MobileNetV2 is used in conjunction with ShuffleNet to boost discrimination ability and enhance the receptive field via convolution layer succession.

Background: 'Standard of care' therapies for adult acute myeloid leukemia (AML) have yielded 5-year overall survival (OS) rates of 30%-45 %. Risk stratification and novel targeted therapies have improved 5-year OS rates to >75 % for certain groups in specialized centers.
Patients And Methods: This is a retrospective cohort analysis of outcomes in patients ≥18 years with newly diagnosed AML treated between 2005 and 2019 in the Harris Health County, Safety-Net Hospital System in Houston, TX.

Pancreatic α-amylase breaks down starch into isomaltose and maltose, which are further hydrolyzed by α-glucosidase in the intestine into monosaccharides, rapidly raising blood sugar levels and contributing to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Synthetic inhibitors of carbohydrate-digesting enzymes are used to manage T2DM but may harm organ function over time. Bioactive peptides offer a safer alternative, avoiding such adverse effects.
