A novel label-free electrochemical strategy for nucleic acid detection was developed by using gold electrodes coated with mesoporous silica thin films as sensing interface. The biosensing approach relies on the covalent attachment of a capture DNA probe on the surface of the silica nanopores and further hybridization with its complementary target oligonucleotide sequence, causing a diffusion hindering of an Fe(CN)6 (3-/4-) electrochemical probe through the nanochannels of the mesoporous film. This DNA-mesoporous silica thin film-modified electrodes allowed sensitive (91.7 A/M) and rapid (45 min) detection of low nanomolar levels of synthetic target DNA (25 fmol) and were successfully employed to quantify the endogenous content of Escherichia coli 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) directly in raw bacterial lysate samples without isolation or purification steps. Moreover, the 1-month stability demonstrated by these biosensing devices enables their advanced preparation and storage, as desired for practical real-life applications. Graphical abstract Mesoporous silica thin films as scaffolds for the development of novel label-free electrochemical genosensors to perform selective, sensitive and rapid detection of target oligonucleotide sequences. The study of green analytical chemistry has garnered significant attention in the context of mitigating global environmental contamination. In this study, we present two methodologies for environmentally friendly chromatography that enable simultaneous and specific determination of Saxagliptin (SAX), metformin (MET), and a pharmacopoeial impurity of MET known as melamine (MEL). The initial method employed in this study is High-Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC), which utilized 60 F 254 silica gel-coated Mark HPTLC plates on aluminum sheets as the stationary phase.

The widespread proliferation and increasing use of portable electronic devices and wearables, and the recent developments in artificial intelligence and internet-of-things, have fuelled the need for high-density and low-voltage non-volatile memory devices. Nanocrystal memory, an emergent non-volatile memory (NVM) device that makes use of the Coulomb blockade effect, can potentially result in the scaling of the tunnel dielectric layer to a very small thickness. Since the nanocrystals are electrically isolated, potential charge leakage paths localized defects in the thin tunnel dielectric can be substantially reduced, unlike that in a continuous polysilicon floating gate structure.

Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) have gained prominence as synthetic receptors, combining simplicity of synthesis with robust molecular recognition akin to antibodies and enzymes. One of their main application areas is chemical sensing. However, direct integration of MIPs with nanostructured transducers, crucial for enhancing sensing capabilities and broadening MIPs sensing applications, remains limited.

Sea cucumbers are widely used in oriental cuisine due to their medicinal properties. Antioxidant, antifungal, antiviral, anticancer and neuroprotective activities have already been identified in several species and in different tissues. Among the class of compounds with biological activity are cerebrosides, which have important functions for the proper functioning of cells, especially neuronal cells.
