Vancomycin is considered the drug of choice against many Gram-positive bacterial infections. Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) is essential to achieve an optimum clinical response and avoid vancomycin-induced adverse reactions including nephrotoxicity. Although different studies are available on vancomycin TDM, still there are controversies regarding the selection among different pharmacokinetic parameters including trough concentration, the area under the curve to minimum inhibitory concentration ratio (AUC/MIC), AUC of intervals, elimination constant, and vancomycin clearance.

Control of dyslipidemia in chronic kidney disease (CKD) is not always guaranteed with statins and/or ezetimibe. Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 inhibitors (PCSK9i) have opened up a new era in lipid control, but their effect on renal function and proteinuria in real life have not yet been evaluated. The aim of the present study was to analyze the evolution of renal function and proteinuria in a cohort of CKD patients treated with PCSK9i.

Kidney protection in thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm surgery.

J Cardiovasc Surg (Torino)

Division of Vascular Surgery, IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital, Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, Milan, Italy.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication of both open and endovascular repair of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAAA). Its definition varies across difference studies, some standardized definitions (RIFLE, AKIN, KDIGO) have been proposed but still not uniformly employed in published papers. Acute kidney injury is multifactorial and is associated with increased in-hospital mortality, long-term mortality and late renal function decline.

Risk factors for renal toxicity after inpatient cisplatin administration.

BMC Pharmacol Toxicol

March 2020

Istituto Oncologico della Svizzera Italiana (IOSI), Oncology Clinic, Via Ospedale 12, 6500, Bellinzona, Switzerland.

Background: After several decades, cisplatin continues to be an essential drug for the treatment of several tumors, however, its potential nephrotoxicity is still a clinically relevant issue. Identification of predisposing factors for renal toxicity could be of value to warrant prophylactic measures.

Methods: We analyzed data from 198 patients with various tumor types, treated with cisplatin containing regimens in our regional cancer center in a two-years period.
