Background: Hypertension (HT) is associated with atrial electrophysiological abnormalities. Echocardiographic pulsed wave tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) is one of the noninvasive methods for evaluation of atrial electromechanical properties. The aims of our study were to investigate the early changes in atrial electromechanical conduction in patients with HT and to assess the parameters that affect atrial electromechanical conduction.
Methods: Seventy-six patients with HT (41 males, mean age 52.6 ± 9.0 years) and 41 controls (22 males, mean age 49.8 ± 7.9 years) were included in the study. Atrial electromechanical coupling at the right (PRA), left (PLA), interatrial septum (PIS) were measured with TDI. Intra- (right: PIS-PRA, left: PLA-PIS) and inter-atrial (PLA-PRA) electromechanical delays were calculated. Maximum P-wave duration (Pmax) was calculated from 12-lead electrocardiogram.
Results: Atrial electromechanical coupling at PLA (76.6 ± 14.1 ms vs. 82.9 ± 15.8 ms, P = 0.036), left intra-atrial (10.9 ± 5.0 ms vs. 14.0 ± 9.7 ms, P = 0.023), right intra-atrial (10.6 ± 7.8 ms vs. 14.5 ± 10.1 ms, P = 0.035), and interatrial electromechanical (21.4 ± 9.8 ms vs. 28.3 ± 12.7 ms, P = 0.003) delays were significantly longer in patients with HT. The linear regression analysis showed that left ventricular (LV) mass index and Pmax were significantly associated with PLA (P = 0.001 and P = 0.002, respectively), and the LV mass index was the only related factor for interatrial delay (P = 0.001).
Conclusions: Intra- and interatrial electromechanical delay, PLA were significantly prolonged in hypertensive patients. LV mass index and Pmax were significantly associated with PLA, and the LV mass index was the only related factor for interatrial delay. The atrial TDI can be a valuable method to assess the early changes of atrial electromechanical conduction properties in those patients.

Background: Imaging both electrical and mechanical cardiac function can better characterize cardiac disease and improve patient care. Currently, there is no noninvasive technique that can simultaneously image both electrical and mechanical function of the whole heart at the point of care. Here, our aim is to demonstrate that high volume-rate echocardiography can simultaneously map cardiac electromechanical activation and end-systolic cardiac strain of the whole heart in a single heartbeat.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) results in electrical and structural remodeling of the atria, which extent is known to be associated with a higher AF recurrence rate after catheter ablation (CA). Recently, a novel echocardiographic parameter derived from tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) [PA-TDI] has been introduced to assess the total atrial activation time, as a noninvasive surrogate of fibrosis and remodeling. The aim of the study is to investigate the role of PA-TDI interval as a predictor of AF ablation efficacy.

The global incidence of pediatric non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is rising, and it is linked to various potentially dangerous complications such as cardiovascular complications, particularly atrial fibrillation (AF). Atrial electromechanical conduction delay (EMD) has been reported as an early predictor for AF development. This study aimed to explore the link between NAFLD and the increased risk of AF development.
