Published: June 2016

Euphorikanin A (1), an unprecedented diterpenoid lactone which possesses a novel 5/6/7/3-fused tetracyclic ring skeleton, was isolated from the roots of Euphorbia kansui. The chemical structure and absolute stereochemistry were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic methods and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Compound 1 exhibited moderate cytotoxicity against two human tumor cell lines HeLa and NCI-446. A proposed biosynthetic pathway of compound 1 is also described.

Thirteen abietane-type diterpenoids, including seven previously undescribed compounds and six known analogs, were isolated from the root and aerial parts of Phlegmariurus carinatus. Their structures were elucidated by comprehensive spectroscopic data analysis (UV, IR, NMR, and HRESIMS) and quantum chemical calculations (calculated ECD or C NMR). Notably, these compounds exhibited high structural diversity.

Pelophen B is a non-taxoid binding microtubule-stabilizing agent with promising preclinical anticancer properties.

Taxanes, such as paclitaxel (PTX), stabilize microtubules and are used as a first-line therapy in multiple cancer types. Disruption of microtubule equilibrium, which plays an essential role in mitosis and cell homeostasis, ultimately results in cell death. Even though PTX is a very potent chemotherapy, its use is associated with major side effects and therapy resistance.

Background/aim: Chemoresistance to paclitaxel (PTX) significantly ameliorates therapeutic efficacy in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), especially in advanced stages, deteriorating the progression free and overall survival rates. One of the critical mechanisms contributing to drug resistance is the excretion of PTX from target cells via efflux pumps. Ivermectin was developed as a bactericidal agent against parasites; however, it has recently been shown to inhibit the proliferation of human cancer cells.

The objective of this study was to investigate the fermentation mechanism of ginkgo kernel juice (GKJ) under unfermented (Group A), Ginkgolide B (GB)-producing Lactiplantibacillus plantarum fermented (Group B), and co-induced fermented (Group C) conditions. The conditions were optimized and further evaluated for their vascular endothelial cell protective effects in vitro. The co-induced fermented GKJ group extensively promoted GB and total phenol contents, reaching 109.
