This study evaluated the impact of Executive Order (EO) 12898 to advance environmental justice. We conducted a review evaluating the frequency and effective use of EO 12898 since execution with particular focus following President Obama's Plan EJ 2014. We found that both EO 12898 and Plan EJ 2104 had little, if any, impact on federal regulatory decision making. To the extent federal agencies discussed EO 12898, most did so in boilerplate rhetoric that satisfied compliance but was devoid of detailed thought or analysis. In the 21st year, with the exception of the Environmental Protection Agency, very little federal regulatory activity included references to EO 12898.

Environmental justice (EJ) mapping tools are geographic information system (GIS)-based digital maps that integrate environmental, socioeconomic, health, and demographic data to identify areas experiencing environmental injustices. These tools are increasingly used to guide investments toward disadvantaged communities. This review examines 25 EJ tools, describing their functionalities, coverage, and indicator types, ranging from biological susceptibilities to socioeconomic and environmental factors.

Despite cultural references to the dangers of hitchhiking, particularly for sexual homicide, no published research investigates these incidents from both an offender and crime scene perspective. Using the Sexual Homicide International Database (SHIelD), we explore lifestyle risk by comparing sexual homicide cases involving hitchhiking victims to those involving victims engaged in sex trade work. The results, based on the use of bivariate and multivariate statistics, indicate that offenders view hitchhiking victims as opportunities for confinement without physical restraint, often engaging in sexual acts and theft.

The challenge of reconstructing air temperature for environmental applications is to accurately estimate past exposures even where monitoring is sparse. We present XGBoost-IDW Synthesis for air temperature (XIS-Temperature), a high-resolution machine-learning model for daily minimum, mean, and maximum air temperature, covering the contiguous US from 2003 through 2023. XIS uses remote sensing (land surface temperature and vegetation) along with a parsimonious set of additional predictors to make predictions at arbitrary points, allowing the estimation of address-level exposures.

The equitable distribution of urban forests in cities and the inclusive consideration of all citizens' voices, regardless of their socioeconomic differences, are prime examples of social and environmental justice in urban areas. The citizens' perception of social and environmental justice can influence their satisfaction with urban forests and this satisfaction can, in turn, affect their intention to participate in the urban forests management. This study aimed to investigate the role of perceived environmental and social justices on citizens' satisfaction with urban forests and the impact of this satisfaction on their behavioral intention to engage in the urban forests management.
