The composite material formed by phytosterol ester (PSE) and γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) disperses readily in water and has been used to mask undesirable flavours. This paper elucidates the structure of the PSE/γ-CD particle. Cryogenic scanning electron microscopy and contact angle measurements showed that the PSE/γ-CD particles formed a capsule-like structure with a hydrophilic surface. A phase-solubility study using cholesteryl oleate (ChO), one of the components of PSE, showed that ChO formed a hydrophilic and stoichiometric inclusion complex with γ-CD at a molar ratio of 2:5. The structure of the PSE/γ-CD inclusion complex was similar to that of ChO/γ-CD, based on differential scanning calorimetry and powder X-ray diffractometry results. Thus, we propose that the PSE/γ-CD particle has a capsule-like structure wherein a hydrophobic PSE droplet is surrounded by an outer layer of the hydrophilic PSE/γ-CD inclusion complex.

Stress and damage estimation is essential to ensure the safety and performance of concrete structures. The capsule-like smart aggregate (CSA) technique has demonstrated its potential for detecting early-stage internal damage. In this study, a 2 dimensional convolutional neural network (2D CNN) model that learned the EMI responses of a CSA sensor to integrally estimate stress and damage in concrete structures is proposed.

Promoting the advancement of the structure and function of metastable substances is challenging but worthwhile. In particular, how to harness the entangled state and evolution path of labile porous structures has been at the forefront of research in molecular self-assembly. In this work, the metastable structures of polyoxovanadate-based metal-organic polyhedra (VMOPs) can be manually regulated, including separation of the interlocked aggregate by a ligand-widening approach as well as transformation from a tetrahedral to capsule-like scaffold via a vertice-remodeling strategy.

The Mycobacterium cell wall is a capsule-like structure comprising of various layers of biomolecules such as mycolic acid, peptidoglycans, and arabinogalactans, which provide the Mycobacteria a sort of cellular shield. Drugs like isoniazid, ethambutol, cycloserine, delamanid, and pretomanid inhibit cell wall synthesis by inhibiting one or the other enzymes involved in cell wall synthesis. Many enzymes present across these layers serve as potential targets for the design and development of newer anti-TB drugs.

This study presents a concrete stress monitoring method utilizing 1D CNN deep learning of raw electromechanical impedance (EMI) signals measured with a capsule-like smart aggregate (CSA) sensor. Firstly, the CSA-based EMI measurement technique is presented by depicting a prototype of the CSA sensor and a 2 degrees of freedom (2 DOFs) EMI model for the CSA sensor embedded in a concrete cylinder. Secondly, the 1D CNN deep regression model is designed to adapt raw EMI responses from the CSA sensor for estimating concrete stresses.
