The flavone tricin (5,7,4'-trihydroxy-3',5'-dimethoxyflavone) is considered to be a selective potent inhibitor of different cancer cell lines and a potential colorectal cancer chemopreventive agent. In this paper we describe a reliable UHPLC-UV-ESIMS method for the determination of tricin in Huperzia plants used in the traditional medicine of the Saraguro community living in Southern Ecuador. An unusually high amount of tricin was found in H. brevifolia and H. compacta, which exceeded the content of this flavone determined so far in other plants.

Article Synopsis
  • Alkaline thermal hydrolysis of sewage sludge creates biostimulants that improve plant growth, with this study specifically examining their effects on rice quality in agriculture.
  • The research found that rice treated with sewage sludge-derived biostimulants (SS-BS) meets safety standards and is enriched with nutrients such as protein and vitamins, enhancing overall quality.
  • The study also identifies key genes involved in increasing beneficial compounds while inhibiting the synthesis of certain less desirable substances, supporting the idea of SS-BS as a tool for sustainable agriculture and functional food production.

The flavonoid contents of different bamboo-leaf extracts and their relationships to antioxidant activity were investigated in this study by preparing nine samples using two commercially available bamboo-leaf extract products and seven bamboo-leaf extracts such as . A high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was established to determine seven flavonoid components (orientin, isoorientin, vitexin, isovitexin, tricin, luteolin and luteoloside) in these samples, which were separated using a SymmetryShield RP8 column (250 mm×4.6 mm, 5 μm) under gradient-elution conditions using acetonitrile as mobile phase A and 0.

The lignin from tritordeum straw, a hybrid cereal from crossbreeding of durum wheat and wild barley, was isolated and chemically characterized. Its composition and structure were studied by analytical pyrolysis (Py-GC/MS), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), Derivatization Followed by Reductive Cleavage (DFRC) method, and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The data revealed an enrichment of guaiacyl (G) units (H:G:S of 3:61:36), which had a significant impact on the distribution of inter-unit linkages.

Flavones and Related Compounds: Synthesis and Biological Activity.

Molecules

September 2023

Department of Organic Chemistry, Iuliu Hațieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Victor Babeş 41, RO-400012 Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

This review focuses on the synthesis and biological activity of flavones and their related flavonoidic compounds, namely flavonols and aurones. Among the biological activities of natural and synthetic flavones and aurones, their anticancer, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties are highlighted and detailed in this review. Starting from the structures of natural flavones acting on multiple anticancer targets (myricetin, genkwanin, and other structurally related compounds), new flavone analogs were recently designed and evaluated for their anticancer activity.
