Probiotics, defined as viable microorganisms that enhance host health when consumed through the diet, exert their effects through mechanisms such as strengthening the immune system, enhancing resistance to infectious diseases, and improving tolerance to stressful conditions. Driven by a growing market, research on probiotics in aquaculture is a burgeoning field. However, the identification of new probiotics presents a complex challenge, necessitating careful consideration of both the safety and efficacy of the microorganisms employed.

Lotus seed extract: anticancer potential and chemoprofiling by , and GC-MS studies.

Front Chem

December 2024

Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, College of Applied Medical Laboratory Sciences, Majmaah University, Al Majma'ah, Saudi Arabia.

Lotus seeds, also known as Nelumbinis semen, has been utilized for over 7,000 years as vegetable, functional food and medicine. In this study, we primarily investigated the anticancer effects of lotus seed extracts, particularly of the methanolic extract (MELS) on cell proliferation inhibition, apoptosis induction and cell cycle arrest in ovarian cancer cell lines. Further, we studied the phytochemical composition of the MELS by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis.

The Identification of Insect Specific iAANAT Inhibitors.

Arch Biochem Biophys

December 2024

Department of Chemistry, University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida, 33620. Electronic address:

An important aspect of food security is the development of innovative insecticides, particularly ones that specifically target insect pests and exhibit minimal toxicity to mammals. The insect arylalkylamine N-acyltransferases (iAANATs) could serve as targets for novel insecticides that satisfy these criteria. There exists a wealth of structural and biochemical information for the iAANATs and iAANAT knockdown experiments show that these enzymes are critical to insect health.

AI-driven identification of a novel malate structure from recycled lithium-ion batteries.

Environ Res

December 2024

INSTM and Chemistry for Technologies Laboratory, Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, University of Brescia, via Branze 38, 25123, Brescia, Italy. Electronic address:

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the discovery of new materials offers significant potential for advancing sustainable technologies. This paper presents a novel approach leveraging AI-driven methodologies to identify a new malate structure derived from the treatment of spent lithium-ion batteries. By analysing bibliographic data and incorporating domain-specific knowledge, AI facilitated the identification and structure refinement of a new malate complex containing different metals (Ni, Mn, Co, and Cu).

This study focused on analyzing the spatial and vertical distributions of 28 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), which comprised five precursors and three alternatives, in the water columns of the regional seas surrounding South Korea, such as the Yellow Sea (YS, Y1-Y10), East China Sea (ECS, EC1-EC6), South Sea (SS, S1-S5), and East Sea (ES, E1-E7). The concentrations of these PFASs detected in 204 seawater samples varied from below the limit of detection ( View Article and Find Full Text PDF
