Ca(2+) entry pathways play important roles in control of many cellular functions, including long-term proliferation, migration and cell death. In recent years, it is becoming increasingly clear that, in some types of tumors, remodeling of Ca(2+) entry pathways could contribute to cancer hallmarks such as excessive proliferation, cell migration and invasion as well as resistance to cell death or survival. In this chapter we briefly review findings related to remodeling of Ca(2+) entry pathways in cancer with emphasis on the mechanisms that contribute to increased store-operated Ca(2+) entry (SOCE) and store-operated currents (SOCs) in colorectal cancer cells. Finally, since SOCE appears critically involved in colon tumorogenesis, the inhibition of SOCE by aspirin and other NSAIDs and its possible contribution to colon cancer chemoprevention is reviewed.

Care pathway for patients hospitalized with venous thromboembolism.

Eur J Clin Invest

January 2025

URC PNVS, CIC-EC 1425, INSERM, Bichat - Claude Bernard Hospital, Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris, Paris, France.

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE), including pulmonary embolism (PE) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT), is a potentially fatal disease with a multifactorial nature, impacting different medical and surgical specialties. Recently, new guidelines and direct oral anticoagulants facilitated early discharge for most DVT patients and non-severe PE patients.

Objective: The aim of this study is to illustrate the distribution of VTE patients throughout the hospital and map their care pathway from Emergency Department (ED) to hospital discharge.

Potential of Type II NADH-Dehydrogenase in Antitubercular Drug Discovery.

ACS Infect Dis

January 2025

Department of Pharmaceutical Engg.Tech, IIT-Banaras Hindu University,Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh 221005, India.

The type II NADH-dehydrogenase enzyme in plays a critical role in the efficient functioning of the oxidative phosphorylation pathway. It acts as the entry point for electrons in the electron transport chain, which is essential for fulfilling the energy requirements of both replicating and nonreplicating mycobacterial species. Due to the absence of the type II NADH-dehydrogenase enzyme in mammalian mitochondria, targeting the type II NADH-dehydrogenase enzyme for antitubercular drug discovery could be a vigilant approach.

January 2025

Laboratoire de Chimie Organique (LR17ES08), Faculté des Sciences de Sfax, University of Sfax, Route de Soukra Km 3.5, BP 1171, 3000, Sfax, Tunisia.

Aim And Objective: It is well established that 4H-pyran derivatives hold a significant position in synthetic organic chemistry due to their diverse biological and pharmacological properties. This work aims to introduce a novel synthetic pathway for highly functionalized 4H-pyran derivatives, achieved through a 1,4-Michael addition followed by a cascade cyclization. This reaction is catalyzed by LiOH·H2O under ultrasonic irradiation in water, offering an efficient and environmentally friendly approach.

Direct pacing of the mid myocardium where re-entry originates can be used to prevent ventricular arrhythmias and circumvent the need for painful defibrillation or cardiac ablation. However, there are no pacing electrodes small enough to navigate the coronary veins that cross these culprit scar regions. To address this need, we have developed an injectable ionically conductive hydrogel electrode that can fill the epicardial coronary veins and transform them into flexible electrodes.

Background: Although antiretroviral therapy (ART) effectively inhibits viral replication, it does not fully mitigate the immunosenescence instigated by HIV infection. Cellular metabolism regulates cellular differentiation, survival, and senescence. Serine hydroxymethyltransferase 2 (SHMT2) is the first key enzyme for the entry of serine into the mitochondria from the de novo synthesis pathway that orchestrates its conversion glutathione (GSH), a key molecule in neutralising ROS and ensuring the stability of the immune system.
