Background: The aims of this study were to assess the prevalence of elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and explore its related factors in Central Taiwan.
Methods: The study employed a retrospective design. The study selected a sample of 5,550 subjects between the years 2000 to 2004. The indivduals undergoing health examinations in a medical center in Central Taiwan were enrolled as subjects for this research. The patients' demographics, smoking and drinking habits, laboratory findings, and abdominal ultrasound results were collected and analyzed. Correlations between variables were analyzed using SPSS/ PC Windows for frequency distribution, t-test, Chi-square test, and multivariate logistic regression.
Results: There were 3103 men (55.9%) and 2447 women (44.1%). The mean age was 49.4 ± 12.3 years (age range of 20-87). The overall prevalence of elevated ALT was 17.1%, with a significant gender difference (23.2% in men vs. 9.4% in women, P < .0001). The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the factors significantly related to elevated ALT were central obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, and anti-HCV positive in men and women.
Conclusions: Central obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, and anti-HCV positive are factors predominantly related to elevated ALT in men and women.

BACKGROUND This study aimed to analyze the risk factors of central nervous system (CNS) infection caused by reactivation of varicella zoster virus (VZV) and provide reference for the prevention and early diagnosis of VZV-associated CNS infection. MATERIAL AND METHODS A prospective study was conducted on 1030 patients with acute herpes zoster (HZ) admitted to our hospital from January 2021 to June 2023. According to clinical manifestations and auxiliary examinations, they were divided into HZ group of 990 patients and VZV-associated CNS infection group of 40 patients.

This study explored the early diagnosis and prognostic value of copeptin in non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS). 171 patients with chest pain or myocardial ischemia symptoms were enrolled. Patients with NSTE-ACS were further divided into the non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) and unstable angina (UA).

Previous observational studies have suggested at a potential link between migraine, particularly migraine with aura, and the susceptibility to early-onset ischemic stroke. We aimed to investigate the causal effects of genetically determined migraine and its subtypes on the risk of early-onset ischemic stroke using the two-sample Mendelian randomization method. Genetic instrumental variables associated with migraine and its subtypes were acquired from two sources with the largest sample sizes available.

Individuals afflicted with heart failure complicated by sepsis often experience a surge in blood glucose levels, a phenomenon known as stress hyperglycemia. However, the correlation between this condition and overall mortality remains unclear. 869 individuals with heart failure complicated by sepsis were identified from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care-IV (MIMIC-IV) database and categorized into five cohorts based on their stress hyperglycemia ratio (SHR).

Lines of evidence have indicated that type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is an independent risk factor for osteoarthritis (OA) progression. However, the study focused on the relationship between T2DM and OA at the transcriptional level remains empty. We downloaded OA- and T2DM-related bulk RNA-sequencing and single-cell RNA sequencing data from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) dataset.
