Background: Children's cognitive performance fluctuates across multiple timescales. However, fluctuations have often been neglected in favour of research into average cognitive performance, limiting the unique insights into cognitive abilities and development that cognitive variability may afford. Preliminary evidence suggests that greater variability is associated with increased symptoms of neurodevelopmental disorders, and differences in behavioural and neural functioning.

Mini Winnies: scaled down and transparent Winogradsky columns for microscopy in microbiology education.

J Microbiol Biol Educ

August 2024

Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Colorado, USA.

Winogradsky columns were invented by Sergei Winogradsky in the 1880s and have commonly been used as a microbiology classroom learning tool in K-12 and collegiate education. However, they can be challenging to examine with microscopy. We scaled down Winogradsky columns into nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) tubes and replaced the natural sediment with a transparent soil substitute toward the goal of observing the microbial growth under a bright-field microscope without column disassembly.

Abacus-based mental calculation (AMC) is a widely used educational tool for enhancing math learning, offering an accessible and cost-effective method for classroom implementation. Despite its universal appeal, the neurocognitive mechanisms that drive the efficacy of AMC training remain poorly understood. Notably, although abacus training relies heavily on the rapid recall of number positions and sequences, the role of memory systems in driving long-term AMC learning remains unknown.

Magnetic resonance imaging instrumentation is taught at Texas A&M University through the ECEN 463 course and its graduate level equivalent. This class guides students through several labs where they design their own desktop MRI system using various hardware components and LabVIEW. Because the system uses professional grade equipment, the cost of each lab station is high.
