Graphene based nanomaterials possess remarkable physiochemical properties suitable for diverse applications in electronics, telecommunications, energy and healthcare. The human and environmental exposure to graphene-based nanomaterials is increasing due to advancements in the synthesis, characterization and large-scale production of graphene and the subsequent development of graphene based biomedical and consumer products. A large number of in vitro and in vivo toxicological studies have evaluated the interactions of graphene-based nanomaterials with various living systems such as microbes, mammalian cells, and animal models. A significant number of studies have examined the short- and long-term in vivo toxicity and biodistribution of graphene synthesized by variety of methods and starting materials. A key focus of these examinations is to properly associate the biological responses with chemical and morphological properties of graphene. Several studies also report the environmental and genotoxicity response of pristine and functionalized graphene. This review summarizes these in vitro and in vivo studies and critically examines the methodologies used to perform these evaluations. Our overarching goal is to provide a comprehensive overview of the complex interplay of biological responses of graphene as a function of their physiochemical properties.

The controlled functionalization of graphene is critical for tuning and enhancing its properties, thereby expanding its potential applications. Covalent functionalization offers a deeper tuning of the geometric and electronic structure of graphene compared to non-covalent methods; however, the existing techniques involve side reactions and spatially uncontrolled functionalization, pushing research toward more selective and controlled methods. A promising approach is 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition, successfully utilized with carbon nanotubes.

Graphene-based nanostructures hold immense potential as strong and lightweight materials, however, their mechanical properties such as modulus and strength are difficult to fully exploit due to challenges in atomic-scale engineering. This study presents a database of over 2,000 pristine and defective nanoscale CNT bundles and other graphitic assemblies, inspired by microscopy, with associated stress-strain curves from reactive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations using the reactive INTERFACE force field (IFF-R). These 3D structures, containing up to 80,000 atoms, enable detailed analyses of structure-stiffness-failure relationships.

Environmental pollution is a big challenge of today's world, as population continues to grow, and industrialisation and urbanisation increase. Out of the different micropollutants in the atmosphere and aquatic environments, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are of particular importance because they have known severe associated health risks to human life and they have high stability, leading to their persistence in the environment. They are generally present in the environment in low concentrations, but, even at these levels, they pose threats.

Coarse-Grained Monte Carlo Simulations of Graphene-Enhanced Geopolymer Nanocomposite Nucleation.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

February 2025

Institute of Construction and Building Materials, Technical University of Darmstadt, Franziska-Braun-Str. 3, 64287 Darmstadt, Germany.

Geopolymer nanocomposites, incorporating pristine graphene-based nanomaterials, are at the forefront of research in advanced construction materials, improving mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. This study investigates the nucleation mechanisms of geopolymers on pristine graphene substrates, namely graphene-reinforced geopolymer nanocomposites (GRGNs), by analyzing nanostructure particle sizes, pore size distributions, cluster sizes, and system energy at a pH of 11, compared to a system without graphene nanosheets. Seven distinct monomer species were selected to observe cluster evolution over numerous iterations, providing insights into the dynamic nature of geopolymer nucleation on graphene-based substrates.
