Background: Acute hypobaric hypoxia-induced brain injury has been a challenge in the health management of mountaineers; therefore, new neuroprotective agents are urgently required. Meldonium, a well-known cardioprotective drug, has been reported to have neuroprotective effects. However, the relevant mechanisms have not been elucidated.

In this paper, we report a fluorescent sensor array approach for the urinary detection of a prohibited substance in sports, meldonium. Four chemosensors with ethidium bromide scaffolds were employed in this method. The interaction between meldonium and chemosensors was investigated by different techniques, such as ultraviolet-visible absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, and mass spectrometry.

Annual banned-substance review: Analytical approaches in human sports drug testing.

Drug Test Anal

January 2019

Center for Preventive Doping Research - Institute of Biochemistry, German Sport University Cologne, Cologne, Germany.

A number of high profile revelations concerning anti-doping rule violations over the past 12 months have outlined the importance of tackling prevailing challenges and reducing the limitations of the current anti-doping system. At this time, the necessity to enhance, expand, and improve analytical test methods in response to the substances outlined in the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List represents an increasingly crucial task for modern sports drug testing programs. The ability to improve analytical testing methods often relies on the expedient application of novel information regarding superior target analytes for sports drug testing assays, drug elimination profiles, and alternative sample matrices, together with recent advances in instrumental developments.

Purpose: to analyze clinical and economical effectiveness of meldonium as component of integrated program of cardio-rehabilitation in patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD) in the early period after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with incomplete revascularization.

Material And Methods: A program of controlled physical training (CPT) was carried out in patients with stable IHD and positive post PCI exercise test (n=48, age less or equal 65 years) starting 8-10 days after PCI. CRT program consisted of 2 phases - inhospital (exercise on treadmill with max heart rate [HR] 80% of that achieved in initial test, 10 times during 2 weeks) and home (exercise on treadmill with max HR 60% of HR achieved in initial test, 3 times a week for 2 months).
