Purpose: To describe a novel securing device for loop colostomies, developed in our institution and report our 10-year experience.

Methods: The T-shaped support device was used in all patients who required loop colostomy and who were at an increased risk of stoma withdrawal. The device was removed on the fifth postoperative day in all patients. An analysis from a prospective database regarding early postoperative complication, from 209 patients, was conducted between 2003 and 2013.

Results: Bleeding, peristomal skin problems, surgical site infection, stomal ischemia/necrosis, stenosis, obstruction, retraction and early withdrawal of the stoma were not noted in all cases. Thirteen patients (6%) reported mild discomfort on the site of the skin suture. Removal of the instrument was fast and easy, with the advantage of keeping the colostomy bag.

Conclusion: The T-shaped bridge device successfully prevented stoma withdrawal in all subjects. The device was safe and well accepted, with minor complications.

Acetyl coenzyme A synthase (ACS) catalyzes the formation and deconstruction of the key biological metabolite, acetyl coenzyme A (acetyl-CoA). The active site of ACS features a {NiNi} cluster bridged to a [FeS] cubane known as the A-cluster. The mechanism by which the A-cluster functions is debated, with few model complexes able to replicate the oxidation states, coordination features, or reactivity proposed in the catalytic cycle.

Exploring the Potential of Linear π-Bridge Structures in a D-π-A Organic Photosensitizer for Improved Open-Circuit Voltage.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

June 2024

Department of Nanotechnology Engineering, College of Engineering, Pukyong National University, Busan 48513, Republic of Korea.

We present the design, synthesis, and evaluation of novel metal-free photosensitizers based on D-π-A structures featuring tri-arylamine as an electron donor, cyanoacrylic acid as an anchoring group, and substituted derivative π-bridges including 9,9-dimethyl-9H-fluorene, benzo[]thiophene, or naphtho [1,2-:4,3-']dithiophene. The aim of the current research is to unravel the relationship between chemical structure and photovoltaic performance in solar cell applications by investigating the properties of these organic sensitizers. The newly developed photosensitizers displayed variations in HOMO-LUMO energy gaps and photovoltaic performances due to their distinct π-bridge structures and exhibited diverse spectral responses ranging from 343 to 490 nm.

Spatial and social cognition are two aspects of fish behaviour that have been subject to an increasing amount of research in recent years, but few have investigated potential behaviour overlaps. Testing the ability for an individual to socially learn a spatial task would bridge this gap in understanding. We provided naïve goldfish, Carassius auratus, the opportunity to observe a trained conspecific navigate a T-shaped maze, and then recorded how many trials it took for them to learn the maze, time taken per trial, motivation, and acceptance of the food reward.

LRRC23 truncation impairs radial spoke 3 head assembly and sperm motility underlying male infertility.

Radial spokes (RS) are T-shaped multiprotein complexes on the axonemal microtubules. Repeated RS1, RS2, and RS3 couple the central pair to modulate ciliary and flagellar motility. Despite the cell type specificity of RS3 substructures, their molecular components remain largely unknown.

The ability of the imine PyCH═N-CHPy (Py = 2-pyridyl, bpi) to behave as a heteroditopic ligand, which is suitable for creating two separate compartments to host metals in different oxidation states, has been developed by studying the reactions of the mixed-valence complexes [(cod)M(μ-bpi)M(cod)] (M = Rh, Ir) with [M'(Cl)(PPh)] (M' = Pd, Ni). The results depend on the molar ratio of the reagents used (1:1 or 1:2) to give the heterometallic complexes {d-M',d-M}-[(PPh)(Cl)M'(μ-bpi)M(cod)] (Pd,Rh, ; Pd,Ir, ; Ni,Rh, ; Ni,Ir, ) and the two-electron mixed-valent compounds [(PPh)(Cl)M'(μ-bpi)M'(Cl)] (M' = Ni, ; Pd, ), respectively. A redox process occurs in the replacement of the low-valent [(cod)M] fragment, whereas the exchange of the [(cod)M] fragment is redox-neutral.
