Carvil, PA, Attias, J, Evetts, SN, Waldie, JM, and Green, DA. The effect of the gravity loading countermeasure skinsuit upon movement and strength. J Strength Cond Res 31(1): 154-161, 2017-Effective countermeasures against musculoskeletal deconditioning induced by microgravity and disuse are required. A simple alternative to provision of artificial gravity by centrifugation is compressive axial loading. The Russian "Pingvin" suit was the first wearable suit to apply this concept using bungee cords tethered around the shoulders and feet. However, poor loading characteristics and severe thermal and movement discomfort were reported. The gravity loading countermeasure skinsuit (GLCS) uses a bidirectional weave to generate staged axial loading from shoulders to feet, better mimicking how Earth's gravity induces progressive loading head to foot. The Mk III GLCS's loading was evaluated and tolerability assessed during maximal joint motion, ambulation, and selected strength exercises. Eight subjects (5 male and 3 female; 28 ± 3 years; 179 ± 0.1 cm and 74.8 ± 2.9 kg), having given written informed consent, had an Mk III GLCS individually tailored. Axial loading imparted, body height, joint range of motion (ROM), ambulation, and strength tests (12 repetition maximum) were performed in the GLCS and gym attire, with subjective (rating of perceived exertion, thermal comfort, movement discomfort and body control) ratings recorded throughout. Gravity loading countermeasure skinsuit provided significant axial loading when standing but significantly reduced knee (-13°), spinal (-28°) and shoulder flexion/extension ROM (-34°/-13°), in addition to Sit and Reach (-12.8 cm). No thermal issues were reported but there was an increase in subjective discomfort. Gravity loading countermeasure skinsuit did not significantly impede strength exercise, with the exception of shoulder press. The GLCS (Mk III) demonstrates potential as a countermeasure by providing tolerable, static axial loading. Furthermore, it may serve as an elasticlike strength exercise adjunct, which may have utility as a rehabilitation modality after further design refinement.

Groundwater is widely threatened by hazardous manganese and ammonia. In present study, a novel gravity-driven fixed-bed ceramic membrane filtration (GDFBCM) with critical PAC-MnOx-ceramsite filters was built to address these issues. Static ceramsite filters in GDCM significantly increased membrane flux from 11 L/m·h to 18 L/m·h on the 50th day of filtration.

Commercially available insulin pumps for treatment of diabetes mellitus are currently not qualified to operate in the space environment. This work rigorously tested the fluid delivery performance of a Tandem t:slim X2 insulin pump in both micro- and hypergravity during a parabolic microgravity research flight. The parabolic research flight environment serves as an analogue to the types of transient gravitational loadings experienced during human-led missions, which provides a foundation to expand testing to suborbital and orbital flights in addition to other extreme environmental tests for wilderness dependency.

The Linker of Nucleoskeleton and Cytoskeleton (LINC) complex plays a crucial role in connecting the nuclear envelope to the cytoskeleton, providing structural support to the nucleus and facilitating mechanical signaling between the extracellular environment and the nucleus. Research in mechanobiology onboard the International Space Station (ISS) and in simulated microgravity (SMG) highlight the importance of gravity in functional mechanotransduction. Although the altered gravity research regarding mechanobiology has been greatly focused on the cytoskeleton and the extracellular matrix (ECM), recent research demonstrates that SMG also induces changes in nuclear mechanics and gene expression patterns, which have been shown to be LINC complex dependent.

ZnO nanoparticles with high safety and stability are often used as active ingredients in sunscreens to protect the skin from ultraviolet rays. However, ZnO nanoparticles are easy to agglomerate, which will significantly affect the ultraviolet absorption and bacteriostatic properties, and the reactive oxygen species induced by the photocatalytic activity may result in irreversible secondary damage to the skin. Herein, the ZnO nanoparticles are dispersed uniformly on the surface of latex particles, and these composite particles are used as shell materials to construct self-assembled colloidosomes by high-gravity technology, which can improve the application properties with synergistic enrichment of the hollow structure.

Intelligent controlled-release nanopesticides have been a crucial tactic in advanced precision agriculture during the past few years, which can improve pesticide utilization and reduce environmental pollution. Herein, a novel hydroxypropyl methylcellulose-based nanopesticide carrier (PCH) with pH-/enzyme-/near-infrared multiple responses was constructed by the initial cross-linking with dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride and the subsequent copper ion chelation and polydopamine coating. Avermectin (Av) was further loaded to create the intelligent pesticide release system (APCH) by antisolvent precipitation.
