Published: December 2016

Purpose: To identify computed tomography (CT) findings for selection between conservative surgery and adnexectomy in patients of reproductive age with adnexal torsion.

Methods: This retrospective study included 54 consecutive patients who underwent preoperative CT imaging before undergoing either conservative surgery or adnexectomy to treat adnexal torsion.

Results: By multivariate analysis, CT finding of tubal thickening was significantly associated with the patients treated with adnexectomy (odds ratio=7.6, P=.008).

Conclusion: Although the majority of patients of reproductive age with adnexal torsion can be treated with conservative surgery, patients who require adnexectomy tend to have a tubal thickening on CT.

Introduction: Locally advanced breast cancer (LABC) accounts for 5 % of new breast cancer diagnoses in developed countries and 30-60 % in developing regions. Historically, treatment relied on mastectomy guided by the Halstedian theory. Advances in neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT), breast-conserving surgery (BCS), and radiation have transformed treatment into a multimodal approach.

Purpose: A prospective longitudinal cohort study was performed to gain insight into the course of recovery in terms of pain, opioid consumption, and mobility in patients with a lateral compression (LC) pelvic injury.

Methods: Adult patients with an LC injury, without any cognitive disorders or limited mobility and who could communicate in Dutch were asked to participate. Pain in terms of NRS (numeric rating scale, range 0-10), opioid use and mobility were recorded at eight time points: at hospital admission, and three days, one week, six weeks, three months, six months, one year and two years after the injury.

Endometrial cancer is the most prevalent gynecologic cancer in the United States and has rising incidence and mortality. Endometrial intraepithelial neoplasia or atypical endometrial hyperplasia (EIN-AEH), a precancerous neoplasm, is surgically managed with hysterectomy in patients who have completed childbearing because of risk of progression to cancer. Concurrent endometrial carcinoma (EC) is also present on hysterectomy specimens in up to 50% of cases.

SOX9 encodes an SRY-related transcription factor critical for chondrogenesis and sex determination among other processes. Loss-of-function variants cause campomelic dysplasia and Pierre Robin Sequence, while both gain- and loss-of-function variants cause disorders of sex development. SOX9 has also been linked to scoliosis and cancers, but variants are undetermined.
