One hundred children were prophylactically treated with 15 mg/kg-1 of metronidazole immediately before appendicectomy and retrospectively compared with 100 other patients without any antibioprophylaxis. No statistically significant difference was found between the two groups as regards age, weight, sex and macroscopic appearance of the appendix. The overall incidence of complications was 1% in the antibioprophylactic group and 9% in the control group. Furthermore, a single pre-operative intravenous dose of metronidazole was as effective as conventional antibioprophylaxis.

Targeting the development of 3D printed reservoir-like vaginal rings (VRs) intended to fulfill the needs of precision medicine, prototypes ensuring prolonged release of metronidazole (MTZ) were preliminary manufactured and tested. Indeed, this drug represents the first-line therapy against bacterial vaginosis, which would especially benefit from convenient as well as easy dose adjustment and from more than 48 h continuous release, thus avoiding barely tolerated and repeated administrations. Starting from a soft thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), hollow ring structures were successfully printed at 190 °C and then extemporaneously filled with drug-loaded, in-situ-crosslinking hydrogel formulations based on alginate (ALG).

: The high recurrence rate of bacterial vaginosis (BV) after antibiotic treatment is at least partially attributed to resistant bacteria. The CAPRISA 083 (CAP083) study investigated the influence of metronidazole (MTZ) treatment on the vaginal microbiome in 56 South African women diagnosed with BV. To explore the etiology of recurrent BV in this cohort, we retrospectively analyzed vaginal swabs collected in CAP083 before and after MTZ treatment.

Metronidazole (MTZ) is a 5-nitroimidazole compound recognized for its dual anti-bacterial and anti-protozoal properties. Non-approved in many countries for farm medicine, due to a lack of data in the literature, the study aimed to determine its pharmacokinetics (PK) in sheep and goats following intravenous (IV) and subcutaneous (SC) administrations. Sheep (n = 5) and goats (n = 5) followed identical study protocols, which involved a two-phase, single-dose (2 mg/kg), cross-over study design with a one-week washout period between treatments.

Currently there are few antibacterial dosage regimens established to be safe and effective for sea turtles. Pharmacokinetic evaluation of antibiotics is an essential step in establishing accurate dosage guidelines for a particular species. Metronidazole is an antibiotic that is effective against anaerobic bacteria and some protozoa.
