We designed anthracene bisimide (ABI) derivatives having two triphenylamine (TPA) groups as donor units at the 9,10-positions to form a novel π-conjugated donor-acceptor system. These compounds and their analogues with ethynylene linkers were synthesized by Suzuki-Miyaura and Sonogashira coupling reactions, respectively. In UV-vis spectra, the linker-free derivatives showed broad absorption bands arising from intramolecular charge-transfer interactions. Introducing ethynylene linkers resulted in a considerable red shift of the absorption bands. In fluorescence spectra, the ethynylene derivatives showed intense emission bands at 600-650 nm. Their photophysical and electrochemical properties were compared with those of the corresponding mono TPA derivatives on the basis of theoretical calculations and cyclic voltammetry to evaluate the intramolecular electronic interactions between the donor and acceptor units.

We have employed a triazine-based conjugated polymer network (CPN) for the selective detection of hypochlorite in a semi-aqueous environment. CPNs have been widely employed in gas capture, separation, and adsorption, but the fluorescent properties of CPNs possessing extensive π-conjugated systems tend to be unexplored. Herein, we report the photophysical properties of the CPN and investigate its sensing capability towards hypochlorite.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a powerful strategy for tumor therapy with noninvasiveness and desirable efficacy. However, the phototoxicity of photosensitizer after the post-PDT is the major obstacle limiting the clinic applications. Herein, a nitric oxide (NO)-activatable photosensitizer is reported with turn-on PDT behavior and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) targeting ability for precise tumor therapy.

A fluorescence quenching mechanism using linear diselenides was proposed for the first time through a combination of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). Herein, we synthesized and screened a two-photon fluorescent probe AFC-SeSe, demonstrating a remarkable 300-fold increase in response to glutathione (GSH). Additionally, AFC-SeSe enabled real-time observation of increased thiol levels following treatment within a short timeframe in a mouse model of stroke.

ConspectusThe design of properties and functions of molecular assemblies requires not only a proper choice of building blocks but also control over their packing arrangements. A highly versatile unit in this context is a particular type of triptycene with substituents at the 1,8,13-positions, called tripodal triptycene, which offers predictable molecular packing and multiple functionalization sites, both at the opposite 4,5,16- or 10 (bridgehead)-positions. These triptycene building blocks are capable of two-dimensional (2D) nested hexagonal packing, leading to the formation of 2D sheets, which undergo one-dimensional (1D) stacking into well-defined "2D+1D" structures.

The chalcone derivatives with hydroxy group () have been examined using low-temperature fluorescence spectroscopy. The study aimed to freeze the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) motion in order to reveal the potential hidden transition(s) that are difficult to observe at room temperature. Although chalcone revealed one emission peak at ~667 nm at room temperature, it exhibited two emission peaks (λ = 580 and 636 nm) in EtOH at liquid N temperatures (77 K).
