Complexation between a water-soluble calix[4]pyrrole and a ditopic pyridine N-oxide derivative in aqueous media produces a bola-type supra-amphiphile that self-assembles to produce higher order morphologies, including multilamellar vesicles and micelles depending on the pH. The present bola-type supra-amphiphile exhibits strong fluorescence due to structural changes and aggregation induced by host-guest complexation. The resulting structures may be used to recognize, encapsulate, and release non-fluorescent, water-soluble small molecules.

Controllable construction of diversiform topological morphologies through supramolecular self-assembly on the basis of single building block is of vital importance, but still remains a big challenge. Herein, a bola-type supra-amphiphile, namely DAdDMA@2-CD, is rationally designed and successfully prepared by typical host-guest binding -cyclodextrin units with an aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active scaffold DAdDMA. Self-assembling investigation reveals that several morphologies of self-assembled DAdDMA@2-CD including leaf-like lamellar structure, nanoribbons, vesicles, nanofibers, helical nanofibers, and toroids, can be straightforwardly fabricated by simply manipulating the self-assembling solvent proportioning and/or temperature.

Supramolecular construction of multistimuli platform for drug delivery is a challenging task. In this work, a pH and GSH (glutathione) dual-responsive bola-type supramolecular amphiphile was successfully fabricated by the complexation between a water-soluble pillar[5]arene (WP5) and a bolaform naphthalimide guest (G) in water. The resulting bola-type amphiphile further self-assembled into supramolecular binary vesicles, which could be disassembled by low pH, a high-GSH-concentration environment, or both.

Photolysis of a bola-type supra-amphiphile promoted by water-soluble pillar[5]arene-induced assembly.

A bola-type supra-amphiphile assembled from a water-soluble pillar[5]arene host (WP5) and a rod-coil guest molecule (G) containing a photoactive 9,10-dialkoxyanthracene group was successfully constructed, which could further assemble into a monolayer supramolecular vesicle. Interestingly, the photodecomposition rate of G was remarkably promoted after its aggregation with WP5, accompanied by the disassembly of the formed supramolecular vesicle, especially with the coassembly of a photosensitizer eosin Y, which has potential applications in phototherapy.
