This paper examines the recent emergence of miniaturized optical fiber based sensing and actuating devices that have been successfully integrated into fluidic microchannels that are part of microfluidic and lab-on-chip systems. Fluidic microsystems possess the advantages of reduced sample volumes, faster and more sensitive biological assays, multi-sample and parallel analysis, and are seen as the de facto bioanalytical platform of the future. This paper considers the cases where the optical fiber is not merely used as a simple light guide delivering light across a microchannel, but where the fiber itself is engineered to create a new sensor or tool for use within the environment of the fluidic microchannel.

A Novel Isotropic Optical Fiber: Antimicrobial Effect of Blue Light on Drug Resistant Organisms.

J Orthop Res

January 2025

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Division of Arthroplasty and Joint Reconstruction, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

Drug-resistant organisms (DROs) necessitate the development of new therapies. Antimicrobial blue light (ABL) is a promising option, utilizing photoexcitation of endogenous bacterial components to generate reactive oxygen species, leading to bacterial death. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of a novel isotropic optical fiber under in-vitro conditions on multidrug-resistant gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MDR-Pa) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

Importance: As an accessible part of the central nervous system, the retina provides a unique window to study pathophysiological mechanisms of brain disorders in humans. Imaging and electrophysiological studies have revealed retinal alterations across several neuropsychiatric and neurological disorders, but it remains largely unclear which specific cell types and biological mechanisms are involved.

Objective: To determine whether specific retinal cell types are affected by genomic risk for neuropsychiatric and neurological disorders and to explore the mechanisms through which genomic risk converges in these cell types.

Supramolecular transparent plastic engineering covalent-and-supramolecular polymerization.

Mater Horiz

January 2025

College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Hunan University, Hunan 410082, P. R. China.

Supramolecular glass and plastic are a new generation of artificial transparent materials that exhibit excellent optical behavior and processability. However, owing to inherent deficiencies in their mechanical toughness and long-term stability, supramolecular materials lack the potential for functionalization and application. Inspired by the toughening phenomena in biological systems, a synergistic covalent-and-supramolecular polymerization strategy was applied to construct plastic-like supramolecular materials with high transmittance the solvent-free one-pot amidation of thioctic acid and (poly)amines.

A serious challenge of the chronic administration of dexamethasone (DEX) is a delay in wound healing. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the potential of Tadalafil (TAD)-loaded proniosomal gel to accelerate the healing process of skin wounds in DEX-challenged rabbits. Skin wounds were induced in 48 rabbits of 4 groups (n = 12 per group) and skin wounds were treated by sterile saline (control), TAD-loaded proniosomal gel topically on skin wound, DEX-injected rabbits, and DEX+TAD-loaded proniosomal gel for 4 weeks.
