Aim: To determine whether combinations of enzymes in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) can act as improved biomarkers compared with single enzymes for predicting the outcome of treatment and also for diagnosing the clinical status of sites.

Methods: Thirty subjects with chronic periodontitis were recruited to a 12-month longitudinal pilot study. GCF samples from three representative sites: healthy (≤3 mm), deep non-bleeding (NB) (≥6 mm) and deep bleeding (DB) (≥6 mm) sites and clinical data were collected at baseline, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months following periodontal treatment. Active enzyme levels (MMP-8, cathepsin G, elastase, trypsin-like activity and sialidase) in GCF samples were assessed. The enzyme profiles and clinical data of each site were analysed for correlation and logistic regression was performed to find the predictive value of the active enzyme levels regarding the outcome of treatment.

Results: Twenty-two individuals completed the study. All active enzyme levels were significantly higher in diseased sites than healthy sites. Logistic regression showed that the combination of MMP8, elastase and sialidase provided accurate predictions of treatment outcome (88% for NB and 86% for DB), which was significantly better than each enzyme alone (61%).

Conclusion: This pilot has suggested that combined active enzyme profiling could provide significant prediction of outcome of treatment.

The present study was designed to evaluate the protective efficacy of troxerutin against cypermethrin-induced behavioral defects, motor function abnormalities, and oxidative stress in mice. Twenty-four adult female albino mice were randomly divided into four equal groups. The first group served as control, the second group was treated with cypermethrin (20 mg/kg b.

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are fluorescent materials that have been developed as sensors for measuring the activities of enzymes. However, most sensors to date rely on end-point measurement and empirical functions to correlate enzyme concentrations with fluorescence responses. Less emphasis is put on analyzing time-dependent fluorescence responses and their connections with enzymatic kinetics.

Relative Frequency of Metachromatic Leukodystrophy in Egypt: A Reference Laboratory Report.

Front Biosci (Schol Ed)

December 2024

Biochemical Genetics Department, Human Genetics and Genome Research Institute, National Research Centre, 12622 Cairo, Egypt.

Background: Metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) is an autosomal recessive hereditary neurodegenerative disease caused by a deficiency in arylsulfatase A (ARSA) activity and belongs to the group of lysosomal storage diseases. A biochemical diagnosis of MLD is based on determining the residual ARSA activity in leukocytes, skin fibroblasts, and urine. This study documents our biochemical experience and estimates the relative frequency of MLD over 21 years (2001-2022).

Background: Enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) systems utilize phosphorus-accumulating organisms (PAOs) to remove phosphorus from wastewater since excessive phosphorus in water bodies can lead to eutrophication. This study aimed to characterize a newly isolated PAO strain for its potential application in EBPR systems and to screen for additional biotechnological potential. Here, sequencing allowed for genomic analysis, identifying the genes and molecules involved, and exploring other potentials.

Objective: Ca overload of muscle fibers is one of the factors that secondarily aggravate the development of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of the Ca channel modulator 2-aminoethoxydiphenyl borate (APB) on skeletal muscle pathology in dystrophin-deficient mice.

Methods: Mice were randomly divided into six groups: wild type (WT), WT+3 mg/kg APB, WT+10 mg/kg APB, , +3 mg/kg APB, +10 mg/kg APB.
