The synthesis of phosphine macrocycles is a relatively underdeveloped area and no standard synthetic routes have emerged. Accordingly, two general synthetic routes to tetradentate phosphine macrocycles were investigated. Both routes use Cu(i) ions as template ions because, unlike other metals such as Pd(ii) and Pt(ii), the Cu(i) ions can be removed from the macrocyclic complex without degrading the macrocycle ligand. The first route involves the coupling of two bidentate secondary phosphines bonded to Cu(i) using 1,3-dibromopropane or 1,4-dibromobutane. Using this route, tetradentate phosphine macrocycles with either -(CH2)3OCH3 or Ph groups bonded to the P atoms were synthesized. Macrocycle phosphines containing the -(CH2)3OCH3 groups were investigated for their potential water-solubility, but experiments showed these phosphines were not water soluble. The second synthetic route involved the alkylation of an open-chain, mixed tertiary-secondary, tetradentate phosphine coordinated to Cu(i). Following formation of the macrocyclic ligand, the Cu(i) template was removed by reaction with aqueous KCN to yield the free macrocyclic phosphine. This route was demonstrated for the preparation of the macrocyclic phosphine ligand 1,5,9,13-tetraphenyl-1,5,9,13-tetraphosphacycloheptadecane. Following demetallation, this macrocyclic ligand was coordinated to Fe(ii) and Co(ii) to form the corresponding macrocyclic phosphine complexes.

A C-H Arylation-Based Enantioselective Synthesis of Planar Chiral Cyclophanes.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

University of Basel, Department of Chemistry, St. Johanns-Ring 19, 4056, Basel, SWITZERLAND.

Despite the growing importance of planar chiral macrocyclophanes owing to their unique properties in different areas of chemistry, methods that are effective in controlling their planar chirality are restricted to certain molecular scaffolds. Herein, we report the first Pd(0)-catalyzed enantioselective intermolecular C-H arylation that induces planar chirality by installing bulky aryl groups through dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR). A computer-assisted approach allowed a fine-tuning of the structure of the employed chiral bifunctional phosphine-carboxylate ligands to achieve high enantioselectivities.

A series of structurally similar trinuclear macrocyclic copper(I) and silver(I) pyrazolate complexes bearing various short-bite diphosphine RPCH(R')PR ligands are reported. Upon diphosphine coordination, the planar geometry of the initial complexes undergoes bending along the line between two metal atoms coordinated to the phosphorus moieties. The complexes based on dcpm ligands (R = cyclohexyl, R' = H, Ph) do not exhibit dynamic behavior in solution at room temperature on the P NMR time scale as it was previously observed for similar trinuclear copper complexes bearing the dppm (R = Ph, R' = H) scaffold.

Tuning the product selectivity of single-atom catalysts for CO reduction beyond CO formation by orbital engineering.

Nanoscale

October 2024

Department of Chemistry, Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence, Greater Noida, 201314, India.

Electrochemical CO reduction (COR) is one of the promising strategies for developing sustainable energy resources. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have emerged as efficient catalysts for COR. However, the efficiency of SACs for the formation of reduction products beyond two-step CO formation is low due to the lower binding strength of the CO intermediate.

Synthesis of a chelating phosphite-phosphine ligand from a tris(quinoxaline) extended resorcin[4]arene and its application in the rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation of terminal alkyl alkenes are reported. Rhodium complexes are formed within the cavity of the macrocycle and branched-selective hydroformylation of 1-octene with a / ratio of 5.9 has been achieved at 60 °C under 1:1 H/CO (20 bar).

Optically Pure Calixarenyl Phosphine via Stereospecific Alkylation on Evans' Oxazolidinone Moiety.

Molecules

March 2024

Synthèse Organométallique et Catalyse, UMR-CNRS 7177 Institut de Chimie de Strasbourg, Strasbourg University, 67008 Strasbourg, France.

A convenient protocol for the synthesis of 25,26,27-tribenzoyl-28-[(()-1-diphenylphos- phanyl-propan-2-yl)oxy]-calix[4]arene via stereospecific methylation on Evans' oxazolidinone moiety was reported. According to the C NMR analysis of this phosphine, the calix[4]arene skeleton adopted a 1,3-alternate conformation. The latter conformation of the macrocycle and the ()-chirality of the carbon atom bearing the methyl substituent were confirmed by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study.
