Published: August 2017

Poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) copolymers have been broadly used in controlled drug release applications. Because these polymers are biodegradable, they provide an attractive option for drug delivery vehicles. There are a variety of material, processing, and physiological factors that impact the degradation rates of PLGA polymers and concurrent drug release kinetics. This work is intended to provide a comprehensive and collective review of the physicochemical and physiological factors that dictate the degradation behavior of PLGA polymers and drug release from contemporary PLGA-based drug-polymer products. In conjunction with the existing experimental results, analytical and numerical theories developed to predict drug release from PLGA-based polymers are summarized and correlated with the experimental observations. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Interplay between Skeletal Muscle Catabolism and Remodeling of Arteriovenous Fistula via YAP1 Signaling.

J Am Soc Nephrol

Selzman Institute for Kidney Health, Section of Nephrology, Department of Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas 77030.

Background: Arteriovenous (AV) fistulas are the preferred access for dialysis but have a high incidence of failure. This study aims to understand the crosstalk between skeletal muscle catabolism and AV fistula maturation failure.

Methods: Skeletal muscle metabolism and AV fistula maturation were evaluated in mice with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Growth-plate (GP) injures in limbs and other sites can impair GP function and cause deceleration of bone growth, leading to progressive bone lengthening imbalance, deformities and/or physical discomfort, decreased motion and pain. At present, surgical interventions are the only means available to correct these conditions by suppressing the GP activity in the unaffected limb and/or other bones in the ipsilateral region. Here, we aimed to develop a pharmacologic treatment of GP growth imbalance that involves local application of nanoparticles-based controlled release of a selective retinoic acid nuclear receptor gamma (RARγ) agonist drug.

Bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) and a polysaccharide (SUP) were embedded in the calcium phosphate cement (CPC) scaffold, and the bone repair ability was evaluated. The new scaffolds were characterized using x-ray diffraction, Fourier transform-infrared, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy analyses. CPC-BMP2-SUPH scaffold promoted the BMP-2 release by 1.

Despite its importance in understanding biology and computer-aided drug discovery, the accurate prediction of protein ionization states remains a formidable challenge. Physics-based approaches struggle to capture the small, competing contributions in the complex protein environment, while machine learning (ML) is hampered by the scarcity of experimental data. Here, we report the development of p ML (KaML) models based on decision trees and graph attention networks (GAT), exploiting physicochemical understanding and a new experiment p database (PKAD-3) enriched with highly shifted p's.

Insufficient radio-frequency ablation (IRFA) of hepatocellular carcinoma accelerates the recurrence of residual tumor, leading to a poor prognosis. Neutrophils (NEs), as the initial leukocytes to infiltrate the IRFA-associated inflammatory area, were utilized as drug carriers due to their inherent chemotactic properties for targeted delivery of chemotherapy drugs to the inflammatory site where residual tumor persists post-IRFA. Previous research has highlighted that the immunosuppressive cytokines in the tumor microenvironment could promote the transition of NEs into a protumorigenic phenotype.
