Background: Vancomycin, an antibiotic with activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), is frequently included in empiric treatment for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) despite the fact that MRSA is rarely implicated in CAP. Conducting polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing on nasal swabs to identify the presence of MRSA colonization has been proposed as an antimicrobial stewardship intervention to reduce the use of vancomycin. Observational studies have shown reductions in vancomycin use after implementation of MRSA colonization testing, and this approach has been adopted by CAP guidelines.

Computational Pathology Detection of Hypoxia-Induced Morphological Changes in Breast Cancer.

Am J Pathol

December 2024

Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Engineering Sciences, University College London, Gower Street, London, WC1E 6BT, United Kingdom.

Understanding the tumor hypoxic microenvironment is crucial for grasping tumor biology, clinical progression, and treatment responses. This study presents a novel application of AI in computational histopathology to evaluate hypoxia in breast cancer. Weakly Supervised Deep Learning (WSDL) models can accurately detect morphological changes associated with hypoxia in routine Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) whole slide images (WSI).

Predicting lack of clinical improvement following varicose vein ablation using machine learning.

J Vasc Surg Venous Lymphat Disord

December 2024

Department of Surgery, University of Toronto, Canada; Division of Vascular Surgery, St. Michael's Hospital, Unity Health Toronto, Canada; Institute of Medical Science, University of Toronto, Canada; Temerty Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research and Education in Medicine (T-CAIREM), University of Toronto, Canada; Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, St. Michael's Hospital, Unity Health Toronto, Canada; Department of Surgery, King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, Saudi Arabia. Electronic address:

Objective: Varicose vein ablation is generally indicated in patients with active/healed venous ulcers. However, patient selection for intervention in individuals without venous ulcers is less clear. Tools that predict lack of clinical improvement (LCI) following vein ablation may help guide clinical decision-making but remain limited.

Background: At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, little was known about the spread of COVID-19 in Dutch nursing homes while older people were particularly at risk of severe symptoms. Therefore, attempts were made to develop a nationwide COVID-19 repository based on routinely recorded data in the electronic health records (EHRs) of nursing home residents. This study aims to describe the facilitators and barriers encountered during the development of the repository and the lessons learned regarding the reuse of EHR data for surveillance and research purposes.

Radiomics is a method that extracts many features from medical images using various algorithms. Medical nomograms are graphical representations of statistical predictive models that produce a likelihood of a clinical event for a specific individual based on biological and clinical data. The radiomic nomogram was first introduced in 2016 to study the integration of specific radiomic characteristics with clinically significant risk factors for patients with colorectal cancer lymph node metastases.
