Glare in aviation.

Health Phys

Royal Air Force Institute of Aviation Medicine, Hants, United Kingdom.

Published: May 1989

The control of high-speed aircraft is a demanding task in which rapid decisions, based on visually acquired information, must frequently be made. Glare, both direct and veiling, is a prime cause of visual degradation in flight. The visual effects of glare are discussed together with means of reducing its consequences. In addition, the visual sequelae of looking at a nuclear fireball are discussed together with means of providing protection.

This Lessons from History article uses science, aviation, medicine, and mountaineering sources to describe some of the effects of hypoxia, illumination, and other environmental conditions on the eye, the central nervous system, and light and color perception. The historical perspective is augmented by an analysis of an informal observation of the altered perception of red color on a deck of playing cards while climbing Mera Peak in the Himalaya. The appearance of a grayer red color on the cards was initially attributed to the effects of hypoxia alone.

The article presents a comparative characterization of the structural materials (composites and metals) used in modern aviation structures, focusing on the airframe structure of the most modern aircraft (Airbus A-380, Boeing B-787, and JSF F-35). Selected design and operational problems were analysed, with particular emphasis on composites and light metals (aluminium). For this purpose, the Shore's method was used for the analysis of the obtained strength results and the programming environment (ANSYS, SolidWorks) required to simulate the GLARE 3 2/1-04 composite.

Introduction: Simultaneous Bilateral Cataract Surgery (SBCS) is still a relatively controversial procedure. The main objection is the risk of bilateral endophthalmitis or bilateral refractive error. However, SBCS has also some advantages (faster visual rehabilitation, lower risk of nosocomial infection, and lower cost).

Evaluation of Aircrew Low-Intensity Threat Laser Eye Protection.

Mil Med

March 2019

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine, INC., 6720A Rockledge Drive, Bethesda, MD.

Article Synopsis
  • A study evaluated prototype low-intensity threat laser eye protection (LIT-LEP) spectacles for their effectiveness in US Coast Guard cockpits and compatibility with night vision goggles.
  • The research focused on performance in various tasks, including vision acuity, color vision screening, and reaction times, comparing LIT-LEP to a control group without eye protection.
  • Results showed that LIT-LEP performed well in most areas, particularly for brightness and color vision, but highlighted some challenges with color discrimination in specific flight display colors, which will inform future design and acquisition decisions.

Objective: To compare the performance of adults with multifocal intraocular lenses (MIOLs) in a realistic flight simulator with age-matched adults with monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs).

Methods And Analysis: Twenty-five adults ≥60 years with either bilateral MIOL or bilateral IOL implantation were enrolled. Visual function tests included visual acuity and contrast sensitivity under photopic and mesopic conditions, defocus curves and low luminance contrast sensitivity tests in the presence and absence of glare (Mesotest II), as well as halo size measurement using an app-based halometer (Aston halometer).
