Background: The aim of this study was to identify whether bilateral axillo-breast approach (BABA) robotic total thyroidectomy (RoTT) is technically, oncologically, and functionally safe.

Materials And Methods: One hundred eighteen patients underwent BABA robotic thyroidectomy between July 2010 and February 2013. Ninety-one (77.1%) patients underwent RoTT, and 27 (22.9%) underwent robotic unilateral lobectomy.

Results: RoTT (n=91) resulted in lower rate of surgical complication and in higher rate of transient hypocalcemia comparing with robotic unilateral lobectomy (n=27) (35.16% vs. 3.7%; P<0.013), but not in a permanent hypocalcemia, transient, or permanent recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy (2.2% vs. 0%; P=1.000, 3.3% vs. 0%; P=1.000, and 0% vs. 0%; P=NS), respectively. Successful remnant ablation rate for the patients with RoTT was 100% on a subsequent 6 months follow-up. No significant differences between 2 groups existed in mean Voice Handicap Index-10 scores during postoperative 6 months (P=0.308).

Conclusions: BABA RoTT might be oncologically safe as well as technically and functionally safe procedure.

The use of social robots for product advertising is becoming prevalent. Previous studies have demonstrated that social robots can positively impact sales recommendations. However, the essential question of "how effectively customers remember the advertised content" remains unexplored.

Aim: To evaluate whether the use of a laxative with reduced patient burden in oral antibiotics and mechanical bowel preparation (OAMBP) could prevent surgical site infection (SSI) in left-sided colon and rectal cancers.

Methods: This multicenter, non-blinded, randomized, non-inferiority trial included patients who underwent elective colorectal surgery for colorectal cancer in a university and community hospital in Japan from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2023. We compared conventional OAMBP (polyethylene glycol, metronidazole, and kanamycin) (cOAMBP group) with modified OAMBP (sodium picosulfate hydrate, metronidazole, and kanamycin) (mOAMBP group).

Trends of minimally invasive surgery in the primary treatment of cervical cancer.

J Obstet Gynaecol Res

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Iwate Medical University School of Medicine, Shiwa, Iwate, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • Minimally invasive surgery (MIS), like laparoscopic and robot-assisted procedures, is increasingly used for treating gynecologic cancers, but its adoption in AOFOG countries is limited, especially for advanced uterine and ovarian cancers.
  • The Laparoscopic Approach to Cervical Cancer trial raised concerns about MIS, showing higher recurrence rates and poorer survival outcomes compared to traditional abdominal surgery, prompting scrutiny of MIS's effectiveness, especially at less experienced centers.
  • Ongoing debates focus on integrating MIS with other treatments for cervical cancer, refining techniques, and gathering real-world data to ensure MIS is both effective and safe for patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) is a common complication after distal pancreatectomy (DP), prompting a study (WRAP study) to assess new prevention strategies during minimally invasive DP (MIDP).
  • The trial involves 172 patients at 14 centers in Japan, randomly assigning them to either a control group or an intervention group that uses polyglycolic acid (PGA) mesh and fibrin glue to reinforce the pancreatic stump.
  • The primary goal is to evaluate whether this reinforcement can reduce the occurrence of clinically relevant POPF, potentially establishing a new best practice in MIDP surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • The advent of the da Vinci SP robotic system is increasing the popularity of robotic techniques, particularly the new single-port robotic areolar (SPRA) approach for thyroid surgery, which was compared to the older bilateral axillary breast approach (BABA).
  • In a year-long study analyzing 111 SPRA and 159 BABA surgeries, it was found that SPRA was predominantly performed on women and resulted in a lower body mass index (BMI) for patients.
  • Results showed that SPRA had shorter flap formation time, less drainage post-surgery, and shorter hospital stays, with no significant differences in postoperative complications between the two methods, suggesting SPRA is a less invasive surgical option.
