Introduction: Hand grip strength (HGS) is an important measure in a physiotherapy assessment and for this purpose it is necessary to have valid and reliable instruments to measure it. In this study we aimed at investigating the reliability, validity, and agreement of the new hand-held dynamometer NOD (OT-Bioelettronica, To-Italy) compared to Jamar® hydraulic dynamometer (JD), the gold standard.

Methods: Fifty healthy subjects were selected; 9 trials for the dominant hand and 9 trials for the non-dominant hand were administrated to each of them: 3 trials of HGS with the JD in rung #3, 3 trials with the JD-adapted-grip (like the NOD one), and 3 trials with NOD.

Postpartum urinary retention has a wide range of publicized incidences, likely caused by frequent misdiagnosis of this puerperal complication. Especially covert postpartum urinary retention has a high number of missed diagnoses due to the lack of symptoms and the time-extensive diagnostics via ultrasound, leading to no treatment and no appropriate follow-up. To simplify the diagnosis and establish a screening tool we analyzed the application of portable handheld-ultrasound devices  (PUD) as used in Point-of-care diagnostics in comparison to established standard ultrasound devices (SUD).

Purpose: This study presents a MATrix LABoratory (MATLAB)-based methodology for calculating intracranial volumes from head computed tomography (CT) data and compares it with established methods.

Methods: Regions of interest (ROI) were manually segmented on CT images using a stylus pen, facilitated by mirroring a computer desktop onto a tablet. The volumetric process involved three main steps: (1) calculating the volume of a single voxel, (2) counting the total number of voxels within the segmented ROI, and (3) multiplying this voxel count by the single-voxel volume.

A handheld fiber-optic tissue sensing device for spine surgery.

PLoS One

December 2024

Department of Biomechanical Engineering, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands.

The demographic shift has increased the demand for surgical interventions to address age-related degenerative diseases, such as spinal fusion. Accurate placement of pedicle screws, crucial for successful spinal fusion, varies widely with physician experience. Integrating tissue sensing into spine surgical instruments allows intraoperative examination of tissue properties, providing surgeons with additional information to prevent screw misplacement.
