An FeBr3 -catalyzed reductive coupling of various aldehydes with alkenes that proceeds through a direct hydride transfer pathway has been developed. With (i) PrOH as the hydrogen donor under mild conditions, previously challenging coupling reactions of unactivated alkyl and aryl aldehydes with simple alkenes, such as styrene derivatives and α-olefins, proceeded smoothly to furnish a diverse range of functionalized alcohols with complete linear regioselectivity.

Plant volatile aldehydes (PVAs) such as cinnamaldehyde (Cin), citral (Cit), citronellal (Citr), and perillaldehyde (Per) have broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and show great potential in agricultural sustainable production. However, most PVAs not only have very high volatility but also are easily degradable in environment, which seriously restricts their wide application. To address the inherent problems with PVAs, four prodrugs based on PVAs are fabricated by conjugating individually Cin, Cit, Citr, and Per to sodium bisulfite (Sod) through a simple addition reaction and subsequently self-assembled into nanoparticles (prodrug self-assemblies) in aqueous solutions.

The current detection methods for glycoRNAs include metabolic labeling of living cells or animals and rPAL that directly detects native glycoRNAs by periodate oxidation and aldehyde ligation. Both of them have some limitations. Here we reported a simple and rapid detection of native glycoRNAs by using lectins.

One-Pot Synthesis of Chiral -Imidazolidinone Cyclohexenones.

We have developed a simple and straightforward synthesis of chiral -imidazolidinone cyclohexenones, featuring six contiguous stereocenters, from feedstock chemicals such as aminophenols, α,β-unsaturated aldehydes, and α-amino acids. Remarkably, this one-pot multicomponent reaction exhibits exceptional diastereoselectivity (>20:1 dr) and relies solely on an amino acid precursor as the chiral source, avoiding the use of transition metals or additional organocatalysts. This reaction is efficient and scalable, enabling synthesis on a gram-scale.

The development of polymers from renewable resources is a promising approach to reduce reliance on petrochemicals. In addition, depolymerization is attracting significant attention for the breakdown of polymers at their end-of-life or to achieve specific stimuli-responsive functions. However, the design of polymers incorporating both of these features remains a challenge.

Department of Biotechnology, Instituto de Agroquímica y Tecnología de los Alimentos, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, Avda. Agustín Escardino, 7, 46980 Paterna, Valencia, Spain.

Artisan bread, known for its simple recipes, natural ingredients, and traditional techniques, has seen a surge in demand, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic. Small bakeries emphasize extended fermentation processes and prioritize sensory qualities in their products. However, the impact of ingredients on the quality characteristics of artisan bread remains underexplored.
