Intercalation and conversion are two fundamental chemical processes for battery materials in response to ion insertion. The interplay between these two chemical processes has never been directly seen and understood at atomic scale. Here, using in situ HRTEM, we captured the atomistic conversion reaction processes during Li, Na, Ca insertion into a WO3 single crystal model electrode. An intercalation step prior to conversion is explicitly revealed at atomic scale for the first time for Li, Na, Ca. Nanoscale diffraction and ab initio molecular dynamic simulations revealed that after intercalation, the inserted ion-oxygen bond formation destabilizes the transition-metal framework which gradually shrinks, distorts and finally collapses to an amorphous W and Mx O (M=Li, Na, Ca) composite structure. This study provides a full atomistic picture of the transition from intercalation to conversion, which is of essential importance for both secondary ion batteries and electrochromic devices.

E2 elimination and SN2 substitution reactions are of central importance in preparative organic synthesis due to their stereospecificity. Herein, atomistic dynamics of a prototype reaction of ethyl chloride with hydroxide ion are uncovered that show strikingly distinct features from the case with fluoride anion. Chemical dynamics simulations reproduce the experimental reaction rate and reveal that the E2 proceeding through a direct elimination mechanism dominates over SN2 for the hydroxide ion reaction.

Human calcitonin (hCT) is a peptide hormone that regulates calcium homeostasis, but its abnormal aggregation can disrupt physiological functions and increase the risk of medullary thyroid carcinoma. To elucidate the mechanisms underlying hCT aggregation, we investigated the self-assembly dynamics of hCT segments (hCT, hCT, and hCT) and the folding and dimerization of full-length hCT through microsecond atomistic discrete molecular dynamics (DMD) simulations. Our results revealed that hCT and hCT predominantly existed as isolated monomers with transient small-sized oligomers, indicating weak aggregation tendencies.

Intrinsic structural and oxidic defects activate graphitic carbon electrodes towards electrochemical reactions underpinning energy conversion and storage technologies. Yet, these defects can also disrupt the long-range and periodic arrangement of carbon atoms, and thus the characterization of graphitic carbon electrodes necessitate in-situ atomistic differentiation of graphitic regions from mesoscopic bulk disorder. Here, we leverage the combined techniques of in-situ attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy and first-principles calculations to reveal that graphitic carbon electrodes exhibit electric-field dependent infrared activity that is sensitive to the bulk mesoscopic intrinsic disorder.

The advent of next-generation nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) has propelled major advances in organic solar cells (OSCs). Here we report an NFA design incorporating CF-terminated side chains having varying -(CH)-CF linker lengths ( = 1, 2, and 3) which introduce new intermolecular interactions, hence strong modulation of the photovoltaic response. We report a systematic comparison and contrast characterization of this NFA series with a comprehensive set of chemical/physical techniques versus the heavily studied third-generation NFA, Y6, revealing distinctive and beneficial properties of this new NFA series.

Crystalline SnS accommodates Na ions through intercalation-conversion-alloying (ICA) reactions, exhibiting a natural potential for high energy storage, while its layered structure facilitates rapid charging. However, these intrinsic advantages are not fully realized in practical battery applications. Herein, utilizing an innovative integration of machine-learning-based thermodynamics, artificial-neural-network-assisted molecular dynamics, and density functional theory, specific solvents are demonstrated to effectively tailor the reaction pathways.
