Three novel C 3-symmetric tris-salicylaldimine Schiff base based "off-on" fluorescence sensors have been designed and synthesized. The synthetic approach involves a simple imine bond (C = N) formation between 1,3,5-tris(4'-aminophenyl)benzene (TAPB) and 3,5-substituted salicylaldehydes. The presence of salicylaldehyde units on periphery of the tris-salicylaldimine Schiff bases masks the fluorescence of TAPB core. Interestingly, binding of fluoride ions to the salicylaldehyde units turns the fluorescence "on" in visible region. Fluoride ion detection limits for the present sensors have been calculated to be in the range of 0.17-3.0 ppm, which depends on the nature of the salicylaldehyde units.

The assembly of MoO and methoxy-substituted salicylaldehyde nicotinoyl hydrazone ligands afforded two classes of hybrid polyoxometalates (POMs). In the Class I architectures, [MoO(HL)(D)][MoO]·CHCOCH (D = CHCOCH or HO, = 0 or 2, and L = ligands bearing the OMe group at position 3, 4 and 5, respectively), the main driving force for self-assembly is the electrostatic interaction between the components. Class II architectures are composed of a POM anion covalently linked to two Mo-complex units through the terminal O or bridging μ-O oxygen atoms, as found in Lindqvist-based hybrids [{MoO(HL)}MoO]·CHCN ( = 0 or 2) and the asymmetrical β-octamolybdate-based hybrid [{MoO(HL)(HL)}{MoO(HL)}MoO]·CHCN·HO.

Detection abilities on tested subjects of sensors should be closely connected to the sensing unit numbers. Herein, two anion sensors ICZ-o-1S and ICZ-o-2S were synthesized by using indolo (2,3-a) carbazoles as fluorescent chromophore and salicylaldehyde as recognition site. Though UV-Vis and fluorescent ways, it demonstrated that F can induce the sensor solutions becoming colored from colorless to yellow green, and can endow them with bright green turn-on fluorescence, proving their sensitive and selective sensing on F.

The application of organocatalytic bifunctional activation in the remote (3 + 2)-cycloaddition between 4-(alk-1-en-1-yl)-3-cyanocoumarins and imines derived from salicylaldehyde is demonstrated. Products, bearing two biologically relevant units, have been obtained with good chemical and stereochemical efficiency. The stereochemical outcome of the process results from the application of a quinine-derived catalyst.

A three-component protocol was established to efficiently synthesize (chromene-thiazole) and related arylazo analogs in good to excellent yields. The desired products were prepared by reacting the appropriate salicylaldehydes, 2-cyanothioacetamide, and chloroacetone or hydrazonyl chlorides. Using piperidine as a mediator in ethanol at 80 °C for 4-6 h, the three-component protocol produce the target hybrids in 87-96 % yields.

Three enantiomeric pairs consisting of copper(II) complexes with tridentate Schiff bases have been synthesized for employing in biological assessments: 1∞[Cu(/-salmet)(HO)] (1-R/S·H2O), 1∞[Cu(/-3-HOMe-5-Me-salmet)] (2-R/S), and 1∞[Cu(/-3-MeO-salmet)] (3-R/S) (where /-salmetH, /-3-HOMe-5-Me-salmetH, and /-3-MeO-salmetH result from the condensation of /-methionine with salicylaldehyde, 2-hydroxy-3-(hydroxymethyl)-5-methylbenzaldehyde, and 3-methoxy-salicylaldehyde, respectively, in a 1 : 1 molar ratio). The crystal structures of 1-R·H2O and 2-R/S are reported. Moreover, the 1-R/S·H2O enantiomers have been subjected to a single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) transformation by heating at 160 °C to afford their dehydrated forms, 1∞[Cu(/-salmet)] (1-R/S), whose structures have also been crystallographically determined.
