Observations were made on the effects of five different methods of laboratory maintenance on the infectivity and virulence of Babesia bigemina for the tick Boophilus microplus. The original isolate was highly infective and virulent, causing premature death of engorged female ticks and reduced egg production. Maintenance of the strain by syringe passage in unsplenectomised calves at six to 10 week intervals reduced both its infectivity and virulence for ticks. When slow passages were preceded by a series of rapid passages in splenectomised calves, the changes to the strain were less pronounced. The other three procedures, rapid syringe passage in splenectomised calves and tick passage in either splenectomised or intact calves, had no statistically significant effect on the characteristics measured.

Ticks are obligate hematophagous arachnids that feed on both humans and animals. Despite the extensive research on detection of bacteria in ixodid ticks in Malaysia, there remains limited knowledge about the detection of protozoa in these ectoparasites, especially in those that feed on farm ruminants. In this study, 1,241 ticks belonging to four species (Rhipicephalus microplus, R.

RNA-seq technology has been widely used for the characterization of the transcriptome profile induced by several diseases in both humans and animals. In the present study, RNA-seq was used to identify the differential expression of genes associated with the immune response in cattle infected with two different strains of , both derived from the same Mexican field isolate, which exhibit distinct phenotypic characteristics: the virulent strain, capable of producing acute clinical signs, and the attenuated strain, capable of stimulating a protective immune response when used as an immunogen with an efficacy greater than 80%. The differential gene expression analysis performed revealed a total of 620 differentially expressed genes (DEGs).

Paraguay, an agricultural country in South America, has a high prevalence of tick infestations in its cattle population due to warm temperatures, high humidity, and extensive grazing management practices. Consequently, Babesia infections, which are transmitted by ticks, might have a wide distribution in Paraguay, but the current status of these infections remains uncertain. Therefore, we aimed to assess the infection status of three clinically significant Babesia species, including Babesia bovis, Babesia bigemina, and Babesia naoakii, among cattle populations in Paraguay.

Bovine babesiosis is a tick-borne disease that is caused by apicomplexan protozoan parasite in the genus of infections affect cattle health, reduce milk and meat production and lead to economic losses in tropical and subtropical countries. parasites are difficult to diagnose in the early stage of infections during low parasitemia and asymptomatic conditions led to the lack of treatment and control at the early stage of infection. This study aimed to integrate a molecular tool for the detection and genetic characterization of in small-scale livestock farming in Thailand, and to study the risk factors association with infections in small scale livestock farms in Thailand.
