Published: September 2016

The field of pediatric mechanical circulatory support has undergone a significant evolution with the advent of devices designed for children and the implementation of new strategies for deployment. With the ongoing shortage of organs the demand for new devices specifically designed for children will only increase. This review discusses the evolution of mechanical circulatory support, available devices, and the implementation of new strategies for their deployment.

Aims: To evaluate the association between transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) and outcomes in patients with significant mitral regurgitation (MR) following acute myocardial infarction (MI), focusing on the aetiology of acute post-MI MR in high-risk surgical patients.

Methods And Results: The International Registry of MitraClip in Acute Mitral Regurgitation following Acute Myocardial Infarction (IREMMI) includes 187 patients with severe MR post-MI managed with TEER. Of these, 176 were included in the analysis, 23 (13%) patients had acute papillary muscle rupture (PMR) and 153 (87%) acute secondary MR.

Procedural sedative effect of remimazolam in ICU patients on invasive mechanical ventilation: a randomised, prospective study.

Ann Intensive Care

January 2025

Department of Intensive Care Unit, Yanbian University Hospital, No. 1327, Juzi Street, Xinxing Street, Yanji, 136200, Jilin, China.

Background: Invasive procedures and environmental factors in the intensive care unit (ICU) may cause anxiety and discomfort in patients, who often require sedation therapy. The aim of this study was to assess the safety of remimazolam tosilate for procedural sedation in ICU patients receiving mechanical ventilation following endotracheal intubation. Eighty patients from a single centre were randomly assigned to either the propofol group or the remimazolam group.

Owing to recent advances in early reperfusion and pharmacological therapies, the prognosis of patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has considerably improved over the past decades. However, the mortality rate remains high at ~40-50% after AMI when complicated by cardiogenic shock. Although immediate coronary revascularization of the infarct-related artery has been the only evidence-based treatment, temporary mechanical circulatory support with a microaxial flow pump (Impella) has become another therapeutic option supported by randomized trial data in highly selected patients.

January 2025

Department of Cardiology, York Hospital, WellSpan Health, 30 Monument Rd, York, PA 17403, USA.

Background: ROS1 tyrosine kinase inhibitors are one of the primary immunotherapies for fusion-positive cancers. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors have markedly improved outcomes for advanced cancers previously with poor prognosis. Entrectinib is an example of an ROS1 inhibitor that can be used for lung adenocarcinoma.
