Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the short-term clinical and radiographic results from a TTC fusion procedure using a lateral locking plate specifically designed for this purpose.

Methods: All the fourteen patients were evaluated using a variety of methods, including a visual analogue scale (VAS), the AOFAS hindfoot score and a subjective satisfaction scale. The average follow-up was 10 months.

Results: The average AOFAS score improved from 41 points preoperatively to 63 points postoperatively. The VAS pain score decreased from 7 to 3 points. Four patients reported excellent results, eight good, one fair and one poor.

Conclusion: Our study provides support for using a specially designed plate for TTC fusion in hindfoot salvage surgery.

Background: Ankle and hindfoot fusion in the presence of large bony defects represents a challenging problem. The purpose of this study was to evaluate outcomes of patients who underwent ankle-hindfoot fusions with impaction bone grafting (IBG) with morselized femoral head allograft to fill large bony void defects.

Methods: This was a 3-center, retrospective review of a consecutive series of 49 patients undergoing ankle or hindfoot fusions with femoral head IBG for filling large bony defects.

This case report presents a three-year follow-up of a young male with bilateral hindfoot fractures due to a high-energy road traffic accident, resulting in a comminuted open calcaneal fracture on the left and an open fracture-dislocation of the right talus. Staged reconstruction was performed, including initial debridement, temporary cement spacers, and subsequent fixation with femoral head allografts (FHAs). The right foot underwent a tibiotalocalcaneal (TTC) fusion, and the left foot received a double arthrodesis.

Tibiotalocalcaneal (TTC) fusion with an intramedullary nail (IMN) has been utilized for a myriad of indications in hindfoot and ankle reconstruction. However, some controversies remain on the optimal position of the hindfoot. Previous studies have reported on the potential medialization of the rearfoot during insertion of the IMN, but few studies have examined the potential affect on the subtalar joint.

Article Synopsis
  • TTC fusion is a surgical procedure for severe hindfoot issues, and this study compares traditional methods to carbon fiber retrograde intramedullary nailing (CF RIMN) regarding effectiveness and safety.
  • A retrospective study of 21 patients showed a 90% union rate, with complications like iatrogenic fractures and postoperative issues noted at 14% and 19%, respectively, while patient-reported satisfaction improved based on VAS scores.
  • The results suggest that while CF RIMN is effective, its complications require careful consideration, and more extensive studies are needed for validation and understanding long-term results.

Article Synopsis
  • Chinese dragon's blood is a red resin used in China to help treat heart and brain problems, especially after a stroke.
  • Longxuetongluo Capsule (LTC) is made from this resin and is being studied to see how it can protect heart cells from damage after blood flow returns to the heart.
  • In experiments with rats and heart cells, researchers found that LTC might help reduce damage to the heart by fixing some of the cell problems caused by low oxygen and sugar levels.
